Hi everyone:

I own a Clavinova CLP-575. I've been using it for three years, and I like it very much. The piano samples are good enough to practise (I mostly use it with headphones late at night). But the point is: the CFX voice seems to be perfectly adjusted but the Bosendorfer one doesn't.

I like warmer pianos, and I think the Bosendorfer voice could be great and I find it somehow pleasing, but it still sounds 'muffled' to me, specially when I play it aloud. The CFX is very clear and you can perfectly distinguish every note. This doesn't happen with the Bosendorfer one.

Some things that have improved it a little bit are increasing the default string resonance setting and also increasing the pedal resonance. But still, I haven't found the 'sweet spot' for it.

So, for those who own or have played a Clavinova model CLP 5-XX: How can I configure the Bosendorfer voice to get the best out of it? How did you configure it?

Thank you very much!

I can't help with the 5xx series. I've tried 6xx models, but not 5xx.

But, here's the thing: The Bosendorfer has a distinctive tone unlike any other piano. Many people like it, and many do not.
If you don't like it as is, I'm guessing there's little you can do about it.

It doesn't sound like a Steinway (my favorite), nor like a Yamaha (which I also like). And it never will.

Brightness adjustment might help a little.

On another thread, and for a different DP perhaps, someone mentioned how dull the Bosendorfer sample was until they changed the touch velocity setting to light or lighter. This is going by my rather poor memory so YMMV.

Some years ago there was a thread and a youtube video about this problem, I saved the settings in a text file: Brightness = +15, Harmonic 0, Effect Depth = 22, Chorus Depth = 5
That improved the Bosendorfer on my piano.
Probably the Brightness is the most important.

There may be similarities btween the 5 series and 6 series pianos; but in any case, here goes.
The bosendorfer is, I believe, a basis for other pianos in there, like "Jazz Grand" and "Warm Grand" at least. they sound like a chip off the Bose block, in other words, some parameters have been changed somewhat. That's how I see it.
You might like some of those voices in preference.
Why not just use them instead? I never use Bosendorfer, but often the other two mentioned, and "Studio Grand" too.
They sound good.

Thank you very much!

@MacMacMac: I like the Bosendorfer, and I find it fuller than the CFX sample, (which is also great). But it’s just that it tends to sound muffled. The 6xx series sound better, at least on YouTube samples!

I’ll try to play with velocity and brightness as other users suggested. I’ll also experiment with the settings that @paxel pasted here (thanks!).

And @peterws, I haven’t paid much attention to the warm/jazz samples, but you’re right. They seem to be “modified bosendorfers”. I’ll play with them too.

Thank you!
