The Elephant in the room question:

does COVID19 affect the fertility rate ?

Is this nature's means to reduce the surplus population?

No, Covid-19 does not affect the fertility rate but it does reduce the population

How does this have anything to do with teaching piano?

Of course, it probably reduces the number of teachers and potential students.

Minimally at best and offset by the modest baby boom due to extended isolation. This too is likely to be insignificant as the future is too uncertain for young families wanting to grow.

Too early to tell, but there are surely more pressing concerns in the meanwhile.

No, it needs a virus or bacterium that has a high death rate among the young.

Like the Black Death, which killed 50% of Europe's population (and about 35% of the world population) in the 14th century.

Even the 'Spanish flu' accounted for only 1% of the world population.

In the short-term, a lot of people locked up at home. Shopping places & restaurants are shut and not everybody wants to be sitting in front of the TV or a computer. People like myself would practice music for a few hours a day. And even people who have taken lessons as a child but have not touched a piano for ages are playing again.

Teachers & students are careful not to have their weekly face-to-face meetings. Someone like myself have been attending weekly lessons through Zoom. You can never be sure who is asymptomatic (has the virus without the symptoms) so don't want anybody touching my keyboard.

The C-19 virus seems to be much more serious than SARS outbreak in 2003. Back then the people most affected in my city were in the Asian community (particularly those from Mainland China). Today the infection numbers are much higher in more places. In the first few months there were fewer cars on the road (commuters going to work). In the middle of summer, there were bicycles everywhere. And many airlines reduced flights so at least the air pollution problem is not as noticeable. Luckily nobody in my family tested positive.
