I stopped playing in March when the ballet studio that employs me closed during the early part of the COVID shutdown. The studio reopened with reduced capacity, hybrid classes (rotating groups of dancers at home) and spread out classes, but made it a priority to bring back live accompaniment from the beginning--even installing a mic system to make sure remote participants had access to high quality sound at home.

But now I'm injured and need to rest for two weeks while my thumb is in a brace and I take medication to reduce the inflammation. While the studio is being accommodating, I feel awful, given how much I appreciate its commitment to its musicians.

Not happy about this at all.

Accidents happen...

You keep your job? They have someone else who can drop in?

What happened?

No, they don't have another accompanist who can fill in. There were two others before COVID--one used COVID to retire completely, and the other can't accommodate my classes as well as her own due to scheduling conflicts.

The classes will continue with recorded music while I'm out, and I can come back as soon as I am cleared to play.

I'm grateful, and everybody is supportive, but I just feel bad because it makes me look unreliable.

Edited to add: ah, you also asked what happened. It's an RSI that flared up due to what appears to be underlying arthritis, and even though I tried to be careful with it on and away from the piano (no big stretches, careful with fortissimo octaves, no arpeggios) it just would not resolve until I ended up in the hand surgeons office yesterday in tears.

That's just plain bad luck.

Hopefully you will be back to your normal self in no time. All you can do is try and be kind to yourself in the meantime. šŸ™‚

Hi Snowflake
So sorry about your hand! But take care of yourself and evaluate how you are doing when you return to work.

Back in january i had to stop for 6 weeks because i injured my wrist while closing the car's trunk. And once in a while i need to stop for a few days because of pain in my back, legs, etc. I just learned, when i must be away from piano there's no point on being sad about it. I just try to do other things, mostly outdoors activities. It's funny and it's healthy.

Think of it as an opportunity to explore one handed repertoire

I had quite enough of that three years ago when I had surgery on my RIGHT thumb to repair a torn ligament.

What are you doing to injure your thumbs so much?

It's a fair question, but the incidents are not really related. One was an incident in which my thumb got caught in a door handle and wrenched backwards. The ligament tore and required surgical repair.

This was due to a non-piano overuse injury--back in July I was helping to sew face masks and in an effort to save materials, I spent several hours over the course of several days picking out thousands of stitches from a bunch of badly made masks in order to reuse the material. The repetitive pinching motion somehow injured the joint or inflamed underlying arthritis. I tried to rest it but never braced it and then went back to work before it fully healed.

When I play piano, however, I am nice and free of tension and can do it injury-free for as long as I like thanks to the diligent efforts of my teacher, who patiently retrained me about eight years ago after I returned to piano.

Did you feel that something was going south while working on sorting the face mask stitches?

It was getting a little sore/tiring but nothing terribly unusual. Iā€™d shake out my hand and keep going. The next morning it was really sore, and sharply painful with certain movements. And that was that.

I'm very sorry to hear this, TS! I hope it heals soon. I know how frustrating this must be, besides being painful!

Yes too bad, it sounds you were careful yet you could not avoid it. Sometimes things just don't work out... Best wishes and take your time to recover!

Every time I log in here, Snowflakes, I tell everyone to say hi from Auntie - anyway, ALL my venues remain closed down tight. No relief in sight. Fortunately, we are doing okay, but I miss the clientele and the super-great instructors and employers. There are some classes going on but they are doing it in the middle of the street...so sad.
