Joining the Estonia club: my first grand piano!

My new Estonia L168 arrives tomorrow!

The tech who usually works on my Yamaha YUS-5, which I am trading in, saw me filling out the paperwork: “have you broken the news to Mister Upright yet?” I said I would be headed home soon to do just that, and help Mister Upright update his Match.com profile. “Hey, that’s what WE are here for!” said Ben, the manager and Piano Matchmaker.

So ... there should soon be a well-tended high-end Yamaha upright on the market. I just had it voiced and regulation checked — I figured that if I were going to spend money on a grand piano, it would have to be really good to outshine Mister Upright, and I wanted to set the bar as high as possible. This Estonia just flew!

I had played an Estonia 190 last month but didn’t love it (and, too big for my place), so I did not have high hopes for the 168. But when I played it, oh what a sparkling jewel!

If I’m going to be mostly at home for the foreseeable future, she’ll be a fine companion. I got along great with Mister Upright, but I was tired of staring at the wall. Can’t wait for the golden view across the strings toward the window, and that sweet voice. This time tomorrow.

Qwerty53:

Welcome to the club. My first Estonia was a 168, and I loved it, too. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I've never played an Estonia, but I understand that they are very nice.

Thank you, BruceD. It seems that you chose a bigger Estonia after your 168. How would you compare your two Estonias to one another?

Thank you Retsacnal! Certainly the warm enthusiasm toward Estonias on PW made me curious. But it was the sparkling tone that got me. Mine was “fresh off the boat” but it had been prepped beautifully. And I was lucky to be left to myself in a showroom full of high-end pianos to explore. I went in thinking I’d prefer the Yamaha C1X or C2X I had played a few weeks earlier. But the 168 might as well have been in a spotlight; I just kept going back to it.

Still waiting ... for some reason the move got rescheduled without telling me! All afternoon I waited, and started wondering whether the piano gods had reconsidered and decided that I did not deserve this wonderful creature. Or maybe she was lost on a truck somewhere out there! But a phone call to the dealer confirmed that my piano was still safe on the showroom floor. Today, the mover called early with profuse apologies and confirmation that she will be here in a few hours.

Fluxo, thank you! I'm considering nicknames and I like your suggestion! As my teacher is from Brazil, maybe I should explore Portuguese names? Anyway I will wait until she is safely in my home and we get to know one another. I never got to a first-name basis with Mister Upright -- he was named in part for his lovely mahogany lapels on the nice wide music desk -- but I have high hopes for an inspiring relationship with the new girl.

Qwerty53,

"Tonia" could very well be a Brazilian nickname for Antonia (the feminin form of Anthony), as Estonia is not a Portughese term. But what it calls my attention here is this: very often I find English speaking people talking about pianos as something of a female gender, although technically you use the neutral pronoun for it (German uses the neutral for uprights, "Das Klavier", and the male pronoun for grands, "Der Flügel"). In the most spoken Latin originated languages, Spanish, Portughese, French and Italian (the language of the country where the instrument and the original word come from), a piano is an objetc of male gender pronouns (respectively, el piano, o piano, le piano, il piano). So, being in Brazil, if I was the fortunate guy to receive at home such a marvellous instrument as this Estonia of yours, I would probably call it by a male nickname, if I was willing to do so. Regardless of that, the most important thing is that you fall in love with it. After all, true love has no gender, has it? smile

Fluxo, what a thoughtful and lovely answer! I think there is something about the affection with which we view these beautiful creations that makes us think of them with names and personalities, even if we are not (as I am not) otherwise very sentimental.

Dear Lady Bird, neighbor to the north, thank you for your good wishes! Yes it is a dream. When the delivery was delayed on Monday, I found myself thinking "maybe the piano gods decided I was unworthy of such a beautiful piano?" But no, actually it was a scheduling mistake, and when they figured it out, everyone scrambled to make things right, and apologized profusely. They acted as if I deserve this piano!

Yesterday lunchtime, Mister Upright put on his coat to go back to the Piano Matchmaker to find a new home, and the movers brought in the new girl.

Half an hour later I was playing a Granados waltz. This morning I came downstairs and she is still here!

Congrats, Qwerty53! I didn't know there was a club, but welcome to it! laugh

I won't forget that soon the moment when mine was moved in. It was like a newborn child entered my life. A pretty big child. wink

Have a lot of pleasure with your Estonia.

Hello, Floknot! Thank you for your kind wishes. Yes, the new piano is a big presence! I'm looking across the room at her now. It is a thrill to be able to play this piano any time I want to! Although in deference to neighbors I try to play quietly in the late hours. It is a joy every time.

There isn't really an Estonia club, as such, at least as far as I know. But owners of Estonia pianos seem especially warm and enthusiastic.
