Yesterday we turned on our Roland only to discover it was 1/2 step flat, every instrument we tried. (Not a transpose problem.) We did two factory resets but the problem persists. Roland says it must be hardware, but only repair place around (actually two hours away) says I'll need to leave the board for four to six weeks. This is a pretty new board, bought in May.

Thought I would see if there might be any DIY options. Thanks.

Wow. If a factory reset doesn't help, then that sounds like a novel problem indeed. Did you try it with headphones directly output from the DP (to make sure it's not something in your external amp/PA system that is filtering/modifying the sound)?

Who knew digital pianos actually could go out of tune? smile

Wonder if it has a global detune feature, or else a set of alternative tuning settings?

What about the pitch wheel? Could it be flaky?

This is a good call - must be worth checking.

It does have a way to globally tune in case other instruments require it, but that resets on restart, certainly on a factory reset. Didn't try headphones, but later did try an independent amp separately from our sound system with monitor speaker.

Pitch wheel is a good idea. I will fiddle with that when I get back to church later. Thanks for the ideas!

Perhaps you could record the piano to show us?

Try two things:

1 - I am not sure a reset is really a reset. Try reloading the firmware... go to Roland's website, download the latest, and update the piano with that.

2 - Tune the piano up 1/2 step, then save as system default. See what happens.

That was my brilliant (?) idea --

. . . Just leave it in the "transpose +1 semitone" state.

One other possibility (which I don't like):

. . . Use tape to fasten the pitch wheel in the "+1 semitone" position.

Okay, when I went in to do a video I discovered there isn't a problem at all, and I'm pretty red-faced that two of us didn't figure it out yesterday.

We had a guitar somehow perfectly tuned a half-step up, and a guitar tuner that included every note instead of the basic E-A-D-G-B-E we were accustomed to, so the consistent green light made us think it was in tune. Add to that a stressful morning that had scrambled our brains, and presto, we created a problem that didn't exist!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. This is one I'll never live down! And to think this is my first post here crazy

lol, I must admit I have made similar missteps.

I had a Leslie speaker which short-circuited when it was connected to the preamp improperly at a gig (11-pin connector with guide pin broken off). I sent the Leslie/Preamp off for repair, and they repaired and returned it to me.

At the next rehearsal, I tried it out and the darn thing was still broken and would not change speed!

So after some cursing and swearing I called the service tech, and we went through a whole bunch of troubleshooting, and I was still upset it was not working even though I could plainly see the rotor and drum turning and changing speed correctly? Eventually the tech asked me if I was sure I had actually connected my keyboard to the Leslie preamp? I then realized that I had not even connected it and was hearing the organ sound through the PA the whole time!

That was embarrassing, especially as this was happening in front of a bunch of people in a studio...

So, congrats! You are part of a large group of similarly talented musicians.

You people are great! Thanks for the light-hearted welcome. And EPW, I have a daughter who escaped to the north, Chicago area in fact, so perhaps I've driven by you a time or two : )
