Hello, I started taking piano lessons in January this year and am on the 2nd Alfred's book. I currently practice on Yamaha YPG-235 and it has been ok so far except for practicing dynamics. I was interested in purchasing Roland F-140R once I have enough savings, but am not sure when the right time is to make such a big purchase. Should I continue on my current keyboard until I complete all the Alfred adult series and know for sure I am truly dedicated to make such a purchase, or is it recommended that I get it sooner than later?
On a side note, if anyone has experience with Roland F-140R, would you recommend it? Thanks!

It is always a good idea to get a better instrument to practice on as soon as possible. I know nothing about the Roland F-140R except the price. I do know about Kawai products ... as I have owned 4 of them. I would suggest you look into this .... https://www.kraftmusic.com/kawai-es110-digital-piano-complete-home-bundle.htmlCheaper and a very high quality instrument. Good Luck

Does the YPG-235 have weighted keys? If not, upgrade asap. Also, it seems like you might want a full keyboard (88-keys) sooner rather than later.... What are your musical goals? Mostly classical music? Popular piano? Something else? I would also recommend that you post this in the Digital Piano forum as well. Esp. for comments about the Roland F-140R. http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/forums/6/1.htmlGood luck!

I made the switch from a 61 key keyboard to an 88 weighted key digital piano 3 1/2 months after starting from total beginner. The transition took about 3-4 weeks to get totally comfortable with the piano: key width is slightly different; key texture is different (you rely on feel so much that this is a surprising part of keyboard familiarity); and of course the action is more demanding & takes time to build up to. Plus you have to figure out all the new bells & whistles. I think if I'd made the switch later into my piano learning, I would have been frustrated at having achieved a certain proficiency, then having to step back for so long. There was definitely a stumble & bumble period when switching. But I'm glad I did it. Dynamics make such a big difference in a song, & now I can play with more pronounced dynamics.
The specs of the Roland F-140R looked good to me too, and the price made it seem like a great bargain. But I got a Korg C1 Air instead -- price, specs, reviews were fine, and it was only the digital piano on my wish list that was in stock. I'm delighted with it. The Roland F-140R has more features, but no real regrets about the Korg for me.

When you want it, and you can afford it, and you have space for it.

Agree with your thinking here Pikka, its time to upgrade to a full piano with weighted keys. Your old Yamaha can only take you so far and usually that is just going to be as long as ''am I going to stick at this new hobby''.
Surprisingly easy, barely an inconvenience. Kawai K8 & Kawai Novus NV10 13x

Honestly it felt so much different from the one that I played on in the piano lesson studio before the COVID-19 and so I started looking into buying one. My music goals are directed towards classical, Yiruma, hopefully Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli), Ludovico Einaudi. Not jazz/blues and I don't think I will be using the different features/voices options in the digital pianos. Thanks for your suggestions.
