I have a clean Clavinova CPV30 in for repair. It has a lot of white key problems. #1)12 sticking at the low end from the low A up. #2)12 broken at the top end. The broken top white keys have the front pair of plactic fins snapped off. I fished them out of the keybed. I cannot decipher a reason for either problem. Could a drop cause this? -Thank you, mikeskory, Lansing, MI 48910

I presume you mean CVP30, right? That's a 1989 release. It has been around for quite a while, eh?

It don't know what might have caused the broken plastic. A drop might. Also, some aging plastics become brittle and can easily break. But I don't know whether that applies here.

Unfortunately Yamaha changed designs by the late 1990s. The keys are interchangeable across any of their consoles that use GH-series non-wood actions. But I think earlier generations were different.

I bring this up because replacement keys and related parts are pretty easy to come by for the GH keyboards. I don't know about the earlier generations. Since you're in the US, contact Yamaha parts in California:

Plastic fatigued and getting brittle and sticky? Lubrication worn off?

It's a 30 year old piano.

Thank you! I have a source for keys. Actually the top keys play ok even with these fins broken off. The bottom sticking is the part I don't understand. I swapped spring, key and weight between E1 and E2. The sticking at E1 was unchanged. Yes it's an old one for sure and I think the customer got it free or close to it. I'll try lubing a 3-4 of the bottom keys and test them.

Lubing and using a new spring did not help. Curiously when the keybed is on it's back every key works fine. When I set it flat the low keys stick again badly. As I stare at it and fuss it the weights are moving fine. It appears to be keys themselves that are finding something to tp rub.
