Hi All, I wear headphones when I practice so as not to bother anyone who doesn’t like piano music. The digital piano keys make a thud noise and this is not pleasant to listen to either.
Is there a solution to this problem?

Maybe closed-back headphones.

Well first pretty much all Digital Pianos makes some key noises. They aren't as loud typically as an acoustic. But still they are audible.

Now the amount of noise depends on brand and model. For exemple, my Casio PX-160 is very noisy in the worst way. While my Yamaha P-515 produce some bassy thump that is not really noticeable when I play music on speakers. Of course with the headphones, if I play with the volume way down I can still hear the keys. But if I play, lets say above 30% the sound of they keys kind of blend with the volume of the piano. On my Casio I could play almost at top volume and still hear those pescable clack clack. You would think they put cherry MX blue keys under those keys !

As mareg said it depends on the keyboard. Also are you wanting to avoid hearing the noise yourself with headphones on, or are others bothered by it?

My old Yami thumps with my cheap earbuds, so I’ve started to play just at a low volume. Even at low volumes I can hear it a bit, but I’m less bothered by it. At some point I should probably invest in a good pair of closed back headphones, as dmd suggested. I do practice after midnight occasionally. :P

I’ve seen other threads on here where the thumping seems to go through the legs of furniture type digital pianos. The result is people in rooms below you may hear a thumping. Not my issue, but I know there is a thread on here about it.

For extreme isolation:

With a set of industrial hearing protectors over IEM's, it doesn't matter (to the player) how noisy the keys are, you won't hear them.

The more complicated the action, the more noise you get.

Grand piano action's make a lot of noise, some DP's try to duplicate this.(though electronic sounds)

All pianos - not just digitals - have key thud noises.
My wife discovered the best (cheapest/simplest) solution: ear plugs :-p

If you're talking about annoying yourself, what digital piano are you using and how low of a volume are you playing that you're able to hear the thudding sound through your headphones?

On my old Yamaha (and probably most keyboards), there are two felt strips, one on top, that is hit when a key is pressed. One on bottom that is hit when it is released. In the past I've removed the top strip and replaced it with multiple layers of self adhesive felt. Takes a little time. Need to stop when adequate noise reduction is achieved, and over-squishiness doesn't yet occur. Then anchor it to the top of the keyboard.

So, yes, it's possible, at least on some. Depends on whether or not you want to, or if you care about warranties or resale...

How old is the piano? All pianos make noise, but they make more noise as they age ... when the felt stops begin to deteriorate. Mine did. I had to replace the upper stop felt.
