Hello folks,

Kawai has recently made “PiaBookPlayer”, a musical score display app for iOS and Android devices, available outside of Japan.

The app connects via Bluetooth (or USB on older models), and allows Kawai customers to listen to the classical lesson songs included in their instrument, while viewing the notated scores on their tablet/smartphone.

The app supports a broad range of Kawai instruments, including: (deep breath)
CN39/CN29/CN37/CN27/CN17/CN35/CN25/KDP110/KDP70, CS11/CS8, ES920/ES520/ES110/ES8, CA99/CA79/CA59/CA49/CA58/CA48/CA28/CA97/CA67/CA17/ATX2, CA98/CA78/NV10/NV5/AURES/ATX3 (Sound mode).

For more information, please refer to the following news page:

Kind regards,
James

Cool that you can turn pages with the pedals!

Hi James sounds good. Can you add your own music to it?

Also can you use the sustain pedal to turn pedals

KJ: can you please ellucidate? PiaBook supports ES series models, but at the same time, those models don't have "classical songs included in the instrument"... How will it work?

May I ask you to confirm the step-by-step process that you go through (after turning on the CA98 and restarting your iOS/Android device), in order to use this app, please?

On the CA98, please select "Sound" mode first, then connect to Bluetooth.

Kind regards,
James

No, I'm afraid not. At least, not yet.

No, I don't believe so. Soft/sostenuto pedals only, I believe.

This is thanks to something we like to call..."Kawai Magic." wink

...and also because the app includes the data for those songs. wink

This means that even an ES110 can view and playback the lesson songs found on a CA99 etc.

Kind regards,
James

Thanks for the clarification. I thought so (and the size of the App points to that) but in my opinion Kawai is making a disservice to itself by stating that PiaBook accesses the music in memory instead of presenting it as a training app for all recent Kawai pianos...

That's a fair point.

I'll bear this in mind when preparing the webpages for PiaBookPlayer and other apps on the Kawai Global website.

Cheers,
James

Indeed.
I was curious to see how it works and what I found is that

the app sends the "diagnostics SysEx" MIDI message, piano replies with all sort of information including the model number.
I guess this acts like a "proof of purchase" (would be good to see what happens with a non Kawai piano). Would the app work anyway? Probably not.

From there onward the app treats the piano like any standard MIDI instrument and sending MIDI notes to the piano (not using the pieces already stored there).

I guess this means that adding "custom" pieces would be very simple, but there might be other apps already doing it, I don't know.

Regards

I have given this app a try and am enjoying it so far.

Is there a way to stop the screen from dimming after some time?

Hello polarbears, thank you for your feedback.

Are you referring to the screen on your piano, or on your smartphone/tablet?
If the latter, I believe this is controlled in the device's settings.

However, I may be possible to implement within the app itself.

Cheers,
James
