I owe this forum so much gratitude for my recent purchase so I wanted to share. I used the archives to research and find out a lot before pulling the trigger.

Initially I was looking at a 60's Blüthner but it was going to need a lot of work. Dead hammers, other weirdness. Then I went to Facebook Marketplace to browse around, and surprise! I saw a Baldwin L on there. It turns out that the seller knew me because I had judged a high school music contest several years earlier and she had been involved! She'd bought the Baldwin new in 1985 and it was the perfect situation: she was a piano teacher but this piano was the "recital" piano and her students only played on it once a year or so. In fact, she told me she never played it otherwise. So it was kept in tune, used some, but not a lot. It was only 6k!

I got a superb technician here in LA to look at it and she told me that it had very little use and it was the best Baldwin from this era she'd ever seen. It was only down to A339. It has a marvelous tone and the action is actually surprisingly even.

I've been compelled (mostly) to playing Chopin Nocturnes and Bill Evans-style music, which isn't outside my wheelhouse but isn't music I like to play unless the piano is having a conversation with me. With this Baldwin, if have an idea, the piano articulates it. That's so rare!

That's a fantastic find. A Baldwin L is a great size, around 6'3" and the bass should really shine.

Congratulations. smile

Congratulations, goodloe!

That is a rare find indeed, and knowing the seller and the piano's history means a lot. Plus, you got a fantastic deal!

I wish you many years of enjoyment with the Baldwin L! thumb

Yes, the bass is really quite special. I used to own a Yamaha C7 and I was concerned about the smaller size, but it's pretty punchy and sounds surprisingly full.

Really is rare to find that kind of an "only driven to church on Sundays" instrument. Congratulations.

Great success story about your Baldwin L. Congratulations!!! I love the Baldwin sound and I definitely like the 6’3” size. For me, just a few inches over 6 feet works perfectly. For the very first time in my life, my piano tech referred to my 6’3” Estonia as a big piano. I’ve been pumped for a week on that comment.
Congratulations on your big Baldwin! It is really a beautiful piano! smile

There is a reason the Baldwin L sounds so good. All the spine ribs are engineered to a low rib profile and the tapering of the panel is better thought out than Steinway. They also stiffened the ribs and thickened the panel a little in the treble to help support the treble to avoid a dead octave. If i had to choose between the Baldwin L and Mason and Hamlin AA, i would have a hard time choosing.

When i go into piano stores (when i travel), i go from piano to piano to find the best one in the store. Its quite often that its a Baldwin L that wins.

Btw, Del Fandrich said that the Baldwin L was one of his favorites.

Congratulations on your Baldwin L! The L is a really great piano. The bass is amazing for it's size. I know you'll really enjoy it!
