Is there such an upright piano brand that carries a "sostenuto" pedal as the middle pedal? I did not know there was such a thing until the other day I tuned for a customer who claimed there is such a piano make. I have not run into this....have you?

Yes a number of upright makes have a sostenuto pedal. The ones I have seen were all 52" made by Samick, but Knabe and other names were on the fallboards.

My u3 has one.

It's a 1986 u3as, I think the S stands for sostenuto.

The Yamaha YUS-5 upright has a sostenuto pedal.

Goodbye Mister Upright (Yamaha YUS5), hello Estonia L168.

The 52" Kawai K-800 has a sostenuto pedal. The muffler function is operated with a lever under the keybed.

Our old family Heintzman upright "grand" (circa 1910) has a sostenuto pedal. It's what I grew up with and pretty peeved as a kid when I found out that most uprights didn't have it. smile

Yes there are, I found a few when I started looking for a piano.

But for the price you can usually buy a better playing and sounding grand, and you rarely need that pedal anyway. I have not seen any piece yet that requires it. Some pieces might benefit from it but even then it's questionable if you should learn it with that pedal because the recital piano may not have one either.

This summer I rebuilt a 1893 Steinway upright with a sostenuto system. It was a real pain to duplicate it with the new parts. I had to make specialty tools to regulate it as well. I'm not interested in doing that again for a while!

I believe both the current Steinway upright models have sostenuto pedals (Models 1098 and K).

Many european uprights have it as well.

There was a period when Wurlitzer (!?!) had a sostenuto option in their 45" studio upright model.
It was actually quite well designed and easy enough to work on.

I think in at least some of the models where they are available it is an option rather than standard.

I never saw or heard of a sostenuto system in spinets.

Yep, Steingraeber offers it as option for their model 130.
