I get emails and texts all the time now days which essentially say "I have purchased (or have obtained, etc.) a used piano and it was moved to my house. I want you to come and tune it but I have heard it should "SIT" for a period first." Primarily, it's the humidity from one spot to another.

So, I'm asking what you think about this question and yes I have read extensively on this subject and you get a variety of answers as I will probably get here but at least here it will be currant. Also, I will admit I have told customers to let it sit for 2-weeks and call me.....recently though I'm saying "don't worry about that lets get a date settled and I'll come by and tune it for you.

What do you think about this question? Do you suggest waiting or just go to tuning....and why?

General consensus is to tune a piano about 4 weeks after it has been moved.

You can play it just fine during this waiting period.

Pianos change to their new environment quickly. If the weather changes, I see it in the piano immediately. I don't see the piano needing more than 3 days to get comfortable in their new home. Same day isn't best, but piano acclimates fast. Don't know why dealers push that idea. It's not what I see.

Even if that were to be true, what exactly is the rush?

Loaner pianos are sent out all the time for concerts. You wait a few hours for them to acclimate, give them a touch up tuning, and they are good to go. It's not like they get knocked so far out of tune with the move to begin with, unless you are dealing with extreme outside temperatures. I would wait if there is an upcoming seasonal change, but not because a piano has been moved. I see nothing wrong with waiting 2 weeks to be on the safe side, but I've never seen that a piano needs that much time to adjust.

I find the pianos that people recently acquire are often pretty far off pitch, so tuning sooner rather than later gets them a piano that is more ready to be played. You can give them the stability speech and let them decide when to tune next...

Laurux, there is no rush. But, why wait to tune and out of tune piano?
