Thank you Keith. That was terrific - well worth the time spent watching it. I own a copy of the LP that resulted from this recording session. Also it was fascinating not only to witness the recording process - and Gould's genius - but also to be transported back in time to NYC in 1959.

I also really enjoyed being transported back in time to NYC.

I also really enjoyed being transported back in time to NYC. Back in the late 50's and early 60's I would always dress up (coat and tie) when going into the city from Connecticut. It was a big deal. Things were more formal back then. Loved the way Gould played the final movement of the concerto with his legs crossed.

Thanks for posting the CBC documentary. I may not be in the majority opinion here, but it confirms how little I can find of value in Gould's work. He has chosen to tie himself to the J S Bach bandwagon to achieve popularity, so he has to measure up to Bach.
Unfortunately I recognize so little that is genuine Bach is Gould's performances that it feels like treason. Plenty of 50's arrogance. Plenty of Steinway sound. Plenty of recording tricks. Plenty of theatrics. Plenty of posturing as the resident genius. Plenty of chewing music rather than listening to it.
None of Bach's humility, dedication and grace.
PS : Must read : "Music in the Castle of Heaven" (Gardiner)
