Hi All,
I posted this on Piano Forum but was suggested to also post here as well. My children have been learning piano on my Yamaha C3. The piano teacher stick clear post-its on the ivorite keys to assist them in learning. I have removed those post-its for a couple months now but the glue stain from the post-its are still on the ivorite keys. I had tried baby wipes, towel with dilute dish soap mixture, tape to "un-tape" the glue but to no avail. Is it safe to use goo-gone? Or is alcohol 70% safe? Is nail polish remover (acetone free) safe? I'm crying inside as this piano has been with me since I was in high school. Please help! Thanks in advance!!

Don't try haphazard chemicals on plastics.
I think you should contact the local Yamaha dealer or tech for advice. The materials and coatings likely changed over time and they may have real experience with similar staining. A local piano tech might also be helpful.

Also, if the tuner doesn't know, ask him for a few spare ivorite keys on which you can do your own experiments.

The Piano Tuner-Technicians forum here deals with similar questions all the time. I'd go there.

That is puzzling but he may not have realized that the Piano Forum and Piano Tuner-Technician forum are separate places here. The tuner forum is a wealth of information at a very high technical level, I learn a lot lurking there even though i don't tune. Signal to noise ratio is probably higher there than on any other forum.

Signal to noise ratio is probably higher there than on any other forum. I never thought of it that way, but I agree completely.

I will not list the forum member’s Name here, but you can look it up. Based on his suggestion of posting here in the ‘spirit of good fellowship’, there was thought put into the suggestion but the reason was not stated.

Based on his suggestion of posting here in the ‘spirit of good fellowship’, there was thought put into the suggestion but the reason was not stated. Almost certainly, he wants it to be a cautionary tale for any teacher here who might be thinking of sticking stickies on keys to "help" kiddie students learn. It's not the first time I've heard of a teacher doing this.

Way back when we had an unweighted digital keyboard on a table, I noticed the keys had scotch tape and numbers on them.
My wife said the kids (preschool at the time) had been playing a game on it. It had something to do with recognizing a tune.
Seemed like a creative and fun thing to do. Probably on a nice Steinway I wouldn't have been quite so pleased.

That thread has some rather idiotic posts with moronic suggestions. However, I must say that something is definitely wrong if you have to leave post-it strips on piano keys for months on time. What is going on? Letter names on keys?

I don't know if the original poster is still here, but something to try that can't harm the keys: olive oil will remove a surprising number of stubborn adhesives, including pine pitch.

The OP hasn't been here since Aug. 31.
It's not clear if there is a substance stuck to the keys (i.e., glue residue) or whether the keys had been stained due to long-term contact with the post-it glue. There are possible remedies for the first, but the latter might be permanent.

I think some of the posts from the other thread scared the OP away for good.

I think some of the posts from the other thread scared the OP away for good. I agree That thread started to go off-track when the posters began attacking the teacher. I use post-it's on piano keys ALL THE TIME. It's a unique teaching strategy that I have developed to get immediate results. Now, it's quite possible that the teacher involved is incompetent and is merely taping letter names to keys to "teach" the kids. However, we don't know that for a fact. And the OP is not likely to admit that in public. Then the lynch mob came.

I think some of the posts from the other thread scared the OP away for good. The original thread had a lot of helpful advice, and the OP joined in with the discussion. There was nothing scary in the other thread. It's logical that there would be no response here, because the suggestion to come to the teacher thread was ill advised in the first place. The OP went to the piano forum, which is about pianos, to ask about a problem involving the piano. Teachers don't fix pianos. The only "unfriendly" thing was about the teacher who had messed up the OP's piano. They basically wrote what I was thinking. btw, if a teacher wanted to put sticky things on a musical instrument of mine, I'd put a stop to it pronto.

Fire the piano teacher immediately. What an awful way to "teach" by cheating. It makes me wonder what else they are teaching wrong that will require reteaching later in life.

The OP has been scared away permanently, so this post is pretty much moot. However, I would like to point out that such "lynch mob" mentality needs to stop. The OP has not corroborated any of the suspicions that the post-it's were used to tape letters onto keys. There are definitely other possibilities, such as students with special needs.
