I hadn't heard of Brazilian pianist/conductor maestro João Carlos Martins prior to Pianist receives bionic gloves in the Pianist Corner, but the story is very moving:

"Magic" gloves let acclaimed pianist play again

According to the article, his piano is a Petrof.

Wow, I knew him because as a kid I recorded on a cassette tape some radio broadcasts of Bach’s keyboard concertos with him on the piano. Those were great performances and I need to look again for his recordings (some of them were with a Bulgarian orchestra and conductor).

It’s so sad that according to Wikipedia he received some injuries exactly in Bulgaria and around the time I recorded those concerts but I never learned of his misfortunes in our country 😢

Quote
Afflicted by injuries and setbacks throughout his mercurial career, Martins has shown remarkable perseverance and determination. While visiting Bulgaria in 1995, Martins was attacked by two thugs, receiving injuries to his skull and brain, and lost the use of his right arm. After undergoing numerous treatments, including a new version of biofeedback therapy on his right arm, he played a triumphant comeback concert in Carnegie Hall in 1996, appearing as soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra, performing Ravel and Ginastera.

In early 2000, he undertook an unsuccessful operation in his right hand, which rendered his hand essentially useless. Instead of retiring completely from the piano, Martins continued to play using his left hand and one finger of the right hand.

After his career as a pianist finished due to problems which later developed in his left hand, he turned to conducting, despite very limited hand-movements. Since then he has led hundreds of performances worldwide including acclaimed concerts at Carnegie Hall.

In 2020, he returned to playing with both hands with the help of a pair of bionic gloves. They were especially developed for him by the Brazilian industrial designer Ubiratan Bizarro Costa.

It is really really incredible that bionic gloves can let him play again. Wasn’t that the dream of the $6 Million Dollar Man?

It's definitely a heartbreaking story, even though the current development is incredibly happy.

But watching his face as he plays in the video is so moving. I have the score for the piece, I had it in a folder of things to play in the future. Perhaps now I'll work on it sooner rather than later.

I’m just wondering how many other heartbreaking stories could be fixed with bionic limbs and eyes.

See I know I'm a cynic because all I thought about was the military applications and market implications....

Sign me up for bionic eyes. Having lost one already and with diminishing sight in the other it would be a miracle.

On the bionic subject, my lovely Jane lost all her hearing and is completely deaf. But she received a cochlear implant (bionic ear) and can hear again. Not as good as natural hearing but still pretty miraculous.

A Brazilian movie about JCM's life was made in 2017 - João, o Maestro - a film that even won some local cinema prizes. I don't know if it is avaliable in English, but just in case, its Portughese page from Google Play Movies can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/movies/details?id=SuL0CtE4joE

An interesting aspect of his life after the damages is his commitment to and enthusiasm with social causes, mostly with a young symphonic ensemble he is the leading conductor, the Orquestra Bachiana Filarmônica SESI.

Medical science and technology has come a long way. It is good to see that devices like this can aid and enable/prolong musical activities that we enjoy.

I experienced a hearing injury several years ago that damaged my hearing, particularly my high frequency hearing. Initially, I was so depressed that I wondered if life was worth living any longer, but thankfully I was able to overcome that depressed state and realize that, although I had lost some of my hearing, I had not lost it all, and I still had a lot to live for.

The hearing aids help, a lot, so I guess I have bionic hearing, to an extent. But as Bill mentioned, it is still not the same as natural hearing.

I think it is wonderful to be able to enjoy the things we enjoy as long as we can, even if we need a little help from bionic devices.

Rick, I'm glad your hearing aids help! Even if they're not perfect, it lets you enjoy music, and that means a lot doesn't it.

Yes, ShiroKuro, it does mean a lot for us to enjoy our music. In fact, it is better than any medicine (or drug) I can think of... smile

The only problem with the hearing aids is that now I can hear the least little inkling of an out of tune unison. I try to ignore it till it gets really bad. smile

Re: The bionic hands/gloves. I remember as a kid watching a science fiction movie, or it may have been the Twilight Zone, with Rod Serling, but anyway, this man was going through some kind of strange physical metamorphosis and developed a sixth finger. He began learning to play the piano, and was soon playing the most difficult of classical pieces with ease, due to the sixth finger on each hand.

Yep, that sixth finger would definitely help... smile

I would like a pair of gloves with Bluetooth midi capabilities. Put them on and let them do all the work! 😆
