And we didn't really answer MacMacMac's question, "Has anyone else suffered this problem lately?" :-) I did answer the question - and the answer was, yes. I can provide more details, if anybody cares.

I care.
All I have on the subject is from a quick read of the AVG forum ... where lots of folks got hit with this. The release, it seems, was around Sep 1. But I didn't get the update until several weeks later.
If you have more information then please share.

If you have more information then please share. I don't recall the exact date it happened, but I did receive an update around one month ago due to my wife briefly using my computer and accepting a program update invitation which I later realised was from AVG. So the timeline fits with yours. I noticed some latency issues with my VST instruments and also some stuttering performance. My Cubase software was also not running smoothly. I started to use the VST performance meter (CPU load) and the Disk usage meter within Cubase to see what was happening. The Disk usage was fairly typical, maybe surging a bit, but the CPU load was ramping up and down quite a bit - hence the stuttering performance. I opened up Task Manager and observed that AVG was surging up and down with a couple of processes. If I force quit these specific AVG processes, the problem instantly disappeared - until AVG restarted the same processes. So I decided to uninstall AVG and have been problem-free since then. I've realised I don't really need it on this machine anymore - as it's not my daily driver for internet access. I don't even really need internet on this computer at all, except for when I need to update something or reactivate certain licences. I can't really offer any technical information about which processes were surging on task manager because I can't remember their names, but hopefully this is useful to know in terms of confirming your problem. I suspect this will be a known problem to AVG and will be corrected in the next update.

I should add that it's quite possible that I was having memory issues as well, I just didn't specifically notice that. I do have a lot of RAM on my system though (32GB) - so maybe I was buffered from the memory aspect.

May I add, it concerns me that we regularly present opinion as fact.... When people are stating something, about antivirus or whatever else, they are only speaking for themselves, and expressing their own opinions or conclusions they've come to. I thought that was clear, and didn't have to be explained particularly. Is anybody here talking on behalf of someone else than him- or herself? Who do people think I am speaking for, if not myself? The Prince of Wales? Maybe I should put a disclaimer after every post, something like this: Disclaimer I hereby declare, that I'm not speaking on behalf of the Prince of Wales, and every opinion I express, is my own, and nobody elses (except in the unlikely event, when someone else agrees with me).I would put this disclaimer in my signature, if I had more room.

I did answer the question Yes, sorry ando I missed that. they are only speaking for themselves TheodorN, there's various statements here along the lines of no one needs AV, or everyone should only use WD. Of course it's all "IMO", but it's rather blanket and presented as fact. I'm not saying my post was any better. And yes I know we do it all the time, not just here on this forum or only in this thread. I guess I'm just saying, computer/internet security is extremely complex, most of us only understand small parts of it, it would benefit from a more nuanced answer.

Good point. We dare not speak on behalf of the Prince of Wales! Let's leave that to peterws, or some other native Brit! I hereby declare, that I'm not speaking on behalf of the Prince of Wales, and every opinion I express, is my own, and nobody elses (except in the unlikely event, when someone else agrees with me).I would put this disclaimer in my signature, if I had more room.

Since we've been talking about antivirus systems eating up computer resources, has anybody had such problems with Norton Antivirus?
I finally succumbed to their offering on a MSI laptop I recently got, but as you know the laptop manufacturers are always pushing some antivirus on you, be it Norton, McAfee, AVG, or something else.
I like it, doesn't seem to have a huge effect on my workflow, but I haven't been doing anything musicwise for a long time. Therefore, I'm asking if anybody has Norton Antivirus, and if it has affected his/her VST use negatively.
