Yamaha p-125 to p-515 upgrade?

I'm a 77 yr. old rank beginner, but love music and know theory well from playing guitar. At this point I'm mostly playing tunes I know by ear with three chords in the key of C. A big fault is that I love equipment, and often get GAS for something better. I've started with a Yamaha p-125, and love it, but am wondering about going to a 515 if I could even find one. My budget is probably that I can't get much higher than that, so the really expensive stuff is out. I mostly play with headphones, so any improvement in the speaker system is mostly irrelevant. Thanks for your advice.

You'd have to try the keys to see if you like them... same goes for the sound (bring your own headphones to the store)... same goes for the way in which both the keys and sound work together.

It needs to come together in a way which makes you want to play it (albeit in the cyber-space of digital pianos).

Out of interest, does it have to be portable? There's something nice about sitting in front of a cabinet/home style digital piano (depending on what you buy!). smile

Learning to play. Consciously incompetent, which apparently is a good starting point. smirk

Unfortunately, trying one out at a store is about impossible since local stores don't have any. If I find one, I'm sure it will have to be online. it does not have to be portable, but I don't want to pay for furniture at the expense of sound and action.

I'd say it's a worthy upgrade.

You get a better action, better sound plus a Bõsendorfer, and some more extra's of course.

Don't forget to also consider other brands like Kawai.

For the OPs sake, are there any cabinet style Yamahas with the same action and sound engine (just for the purpose of being able go into a store, to get an idea of what the P515 is like to play? Blindfold optional).

If I'm not mistaken the P515 is practically a portable clp645. I'm not sure, maybe someone who knows can confirm this.

It is. The Speakers aren't that powerful ofc but basically it's the slab version of the CLP-645.

Assuming you can get to a metro area in less than a day's drive, I'd say take the day trip to some place where you can try as many pianos as possible, even if you have to spend the night in a hotel or your car. There's just so many great choices and there's no way to guess what you're going to like without trying it yourself. If you indicate your location, someone from that area of the country will likely be able to make some suggestions on places to visit.

You're around 5 years older than me. you won't want to spend hours changing settings, but you might like to fiddle around with stuff to some degree.
The 515 is a good 'un; it does sound very similar to the consloe model CLP645 and represents good value if you can get one!
You'll need a stand, too.

Stands can be selfmade easily. I bought a P-115 a month and searched for a wooden stand. Either they are sold out and never came back or they where expensive as heck.

So i decided to build my own one: https://imgur.com/a/74HQMdA

It fits perfectly. I built it so that I don't need any screws and can simply take the piano down when necessary. The total costs where around 50€ and 2 hours of work + shopping the parts.
