As a one year old beginner I have a Kawai es110 slab and a Kawai CN37 console piano. I play both 6 months a year each in different locations. My question is, do I upgrade the learner es110 for maybe Kawai MP7SE or keep the es110 and upgrade the CN37 for something like Yamaha nu1x? I'm happy with CN37 but probably only because it's better than es110.
Any views appreciated.

Can't imagine why you need to upgrade either yet unless it's on a whim. You can play super stuff on both those pianos. If you feel like a change, well, just look around and wait 'till you find something special.

It's either Cn79 or Novus 10. It doesn't make sense to buy anything in between.

I agree with this, in the absence of any further explanation of your GAS. What are you specifically looking for in any upgrade and why?

If you don't want to drop $10k+, stay with es110/cn37 they are great.

Thanks for replies. Will keep the CN37 but find the es110 touch a little light. Would only cost me £1000 to upgrade to MP7SE or Yamaha 515. Is it worth the upgrade?

I have not played the p515 or mp7se, but if I was upgrading, personally I would be at least considering upgrading to something with one of the kawai wooden key actions, these are great imo.

I agree with wooden key action recommendations.

I had MP7 (not SE) and found that:

1) Its keyboard is too light and not good for advanced piano work. For example, it is impossible to play glissandi in p or pp with light or medium touch sensitivity settings. With a VPC1 (wooden keys) this is perfectly possible.

2) Its instrument set is non-inspiring. The piano instruments are not bad, but they are bleak in comparison with piano VSTi-s that are popular today. So, if you are comfortable with computers, you can consider a PC or MAC + VPC1 + DAW + VSTi path. If not, listen to the recommendations of other participants of this discussion.

3) Its classical orchestra sounds are garbage even in comparison with my 15-years-old Yamaha Motif keyboard orchestra sounds.

Funny. I didn't think any digital piano could be upgraded.

The OP doesn't intend to upgrade his piano. I think he wants to replace it. smile

No, skip that and go right to the real stuff.

Why bring the digital vs acoustic discussion here? I believe the OP is only considering digital options.

Wood is a scam.. There's no reason why keyboards should use wood..

Plastic + extruded aluminum w/ steel fluid bearings.

Yes only interested in digital pianos and not vsts.
I think mp7se has wooden keys and Yamaha 515 partial wood keys. Are these worth upgraded to es110? Anyone got experience of playing all 3 DPS.

I wouldn't go off what they keys are made of if I were you.
Try them in the store, and see which you prefer to play!

Action preference is very subjective. Unless you have Hulk hands or play extremely tonnes of Chopin and Liszt very aggressively on a daily basis, you're unlikely to break the keys of the MP7SE.
The advantage of the MP7SE action over the MP11SE and Yamaha P515 is that it is slightly more versitile: being able to handle organ / synth parts a bit better. However, it's a nice action to play (the RHIII) and there are some downsides to the NXW action (very heavy) and the Grand Feel 1 action (a bit slower/tad squishy at the bottom).

Picking an action is always a compromise.

Instruments: Current - Kawai MP7SE; Past - Kawai MP7, Yamaha PSR7000
Software: Sibelius 7; Neuratron Photoscore Pro 8

It's not just about what the keys are made of, but also the way they work. All kawai wooden key actions work with a seesaw mechanism that's much more like a real piano, compared to folded actions.

Now how much difference that really makes, I have no idea. All I know is the vpc1 (kawai rm3 grand ii action) plays and feels pretty fantastic. Especially compared to the cp33 (yamaha gh action) i owned before it.
