I have a Vose & Sons "square" piano, serial # 11541

The one site I found with a list of dates/numbers reads thus:

1853 - 500
1855 - 1400
1860 - 2900
1865 - 3600
1870 - 5000
1880 - 13000
1885 - 17000
1890 - 26300
1895 - 35000
1900 - 44000
1905 - 57000
1910 - 68000
1915 - 78000
1920 - 86000
1925 - 93300
1930 - 101000
1970 - 102700
1975 - 114100
1980 - 119100
1982 - 120200

If accurate it would mean that my Vose & Sons would have been built prior to 1880. However, historically it appears that Vose didn't add his sons to the brand until 1889 - all earlier pianos were simply labeled "Vose". So, I'm guessing that this list above just isn't accurate. If that's the case, does anyone know where I can find a more accurate listing?

The calculator works... sort of. It's apparently accurate insofar as giving up the theoretical manufacture dates, like on the chart I posted above, but it doesn't explain the apparent anomaly that shows it being made before Vose involved his sons in the business. The piano has original Vose & Sons lettering on it, but the very basic information I see in a couple of places says that the kids weren't involved until 1889 and that's when he changed the name of the company. The calculator mirrors the 1870-1880 dates above.

This isn't a big deal, just a mystery I'd like to solve. Thanks!

Bill

I see several David G's in the membership. Which one are you referring to? Thanks!

According to Spillane, the Vose sons were born in the 1850s, so they were likely to have been involved in the business by 1880.

BDB,

That makes sense. They were probably working around the shop for years before Pop added them officially. I just looked up that Spillane info - thanks! They must have had the Vose & Sons name on it long before the actual incorporation of the company. So I guess mine actually WAS built by them in the 1870s.

This is the quote that I've found on a couple of sites:

"In 1889, James brought his sons into the business and established the name we know today as Vose and Sons."

This probably truncates the fact that he brought the sons into the business long before 1889 when he actually incorporated. Some of these sites abbreviate a little too much, methinks.

Thanks again...if only there were records that narrowed the year down, instead of just "1870-1880". But it's all good.

Bill

It the piano was refinished at some point, they might have used a newer decal with vose and sons logo instead.

I suppose that's possible, but if it was redone it was a loooong time ago. It's clearly not be done in decades if at all. Thanks for the tip!
