How much luck have any of you had sorting out the congested lower midrange of a newer baby grand (5'3") centered around the bass break essentially, and opening up the sound?

Lipstick on the pig may help.

Some of the newer designs coming out of Asia may actually be better for smaller grands than older American or European designs. More overwound bass strings enables designers to carry higher tensions into the tenor range, while still having a purer sound.

Have you had it competently voiced? Might be worth the investment.

I can voice it but without a doubt a dominant component of the tone is the design of the piano, its really a symptom of the size and design constraints; I have encountered a lot of pianos this size that have this type of sound. To be clearer, I think the piano sounds nice but, it would be improved if the low-mids were a little more open sounding. The question is has anyone messed about with this? Changed string gauges? Some other juju.

If I march down this road I will try different hammers on it but I know there are people on here with decades of experience and maybe they have found a way.

You can always try adding a little mass to the end of the long bridge.
Experiment with a small vice grip on a bridge pin in that area.
If it helps, 80 or 90 grams of brass can be attached on the underside.
