I've got a fair number of pieces well memorized, skill levels like Suite bergamasque and Chopin nocturnes.

I was wondering how much is muscle memory vs. other forms of memory. As an experiment I tried playing some of these pieces with my digital keyboard transposed up or down a few notes (I'm pushing the transpose button, not transposing while playing).

Some sections went well but others I found myself hesitating to know where I was going and which key to play. It took more effort. Not sure what this proved.... Has anyone tried this with a piece you know really well?

Unless you have perfect pitch I don't see how pushing the transpose button changes anything or is a way of testing something about muscle memory. If your piano was tuned to higher pitch than A440 it wouldn't affect your playing or ability to play from memory.

I think all pianists automatically use muscle and aural memory when playing from memory. Of course, they may use other memory techniques in addition.
