Has anyone tried this? Dunking the keys in a bucket of acetone. Then the keytops come off easily like butter?

Let's see...
1) Acetone is toxic, evaporates quickly and vapors are flammable.
2) Acetone can dissolve keytop material -- but not necessarily the glue that holds the keytops on.
3) Other options are tested and effective.

Um... what is the reasoning behind this question?

Um... what is the reasoning behind this question?

I saw a video of a tech doing it and wondered whether anyone else does it.

Use an iron either dry or with a wet rag. I usually use dry unless there's a problem. Set it to medium low heat and place it on the first few keys. Move the iron along as remove the tops with a kitchen knife. Goes pretty quick.

This is an example of why most YouTube videos for piano technology are junk. If not outright plain wrong, there's almost always something that is not explained or can be mis-construed by someone without background experience for context. This can be true even of PTG videos.
There are exceptions, but how can a beginner tell the difference?

I would not want acetone soaking into the wood. Plus it can dissolve the glue holding on key buttons, balance buttons and key bushings. Just a bad idea all around.

I'm filled with horror at the thought of an open bucket of acetone.
