I was looking through grand pianos listed on FB Marketplace (as I often do when I have to sit around and wait for something) and came across this Gaveau piano listed for sale. I've never seen one before (and in fact the only reason I recognized the name is because of the book "The Piano Shop on the Left Bank")

It looks like maybe they want offers on it, because the price is listed as $123,456, which is probably a "placeholder" of sorts. I'm curious about what it would sell for though. Very pretty:

I also found this photo of someone trying (but not trying hard enough) to sell a Yamaha B2:

That Gaveau might be really difficult to value actually. As a piece of furniture it certainly looks beautiful and it appeals to a particular taste/decor. The case is in excellent condition or so it seems.

As an instrument who knows what it's like? I don't know if Gaveau used a conventional action at that time, so it might be difficult to get parts for it although a new stack could be installed if it was going to a serious player. The keyboard looks to be in good condition and it looks like it has been re-strung at some point in the last 30 years, although it could have just been kept closed.

I'm going to go conservative with my guess but keep it in a wide range and say it could go between $8,000 and $20,000. It really depends if someone falls in love with that case, what the value is. We may find it goes for much less or much more?

Here is little history on the Gaveau piano .Did Pleyel and later Schimmel take over the production of this piano?

Oh and an art case Gaveau ! It says something about Schimmel there.

But at least they could have centered the vase of flowers on the centre of the round medallion on the lid before they took that photograph, couldn't they? smile smile

Cheers!

I don't think the price is a mistake if all the decoration is marquetry. Most of those interested in this kind of art case are not so interested in the quality of the insides and it's truly spectacular.

It's in the sixth photograph showing the piano from the treble side, lid closed.

When I was in high school we had music classes. A Gaveau Upright was in the class and its sound was superb for an upright. This has indeed inspired me to take up piano lessons and my teacher had a Grand Pleyel and allowed me to practice on it since my family did not have a piano at home. I considered myself to be lucky for her generosity. And now there is no more Gaveau or Pleyel made in France. What a pity.

Yes it is sad to lose these instruments. All you have left are aging ones which can be restored at a price , and peoples memories of them.

Don’t feel bad Bruce. That Gaveau is prettier than all the Estonias I’ve seen. But I’d bet my allowance that our Estonia’s sound far more beautiful.

Those Gaveau's and Pleyels had a really beautiful tone quality.
I once tried a Pleyel. Thier demise is a great loss as Vuong has
mentioned. However .....we should be thankful for the pianos we have.

Estonias are indeed wonderful but I don’t see how anyone can make a decision about a piano they haven’t seen and heard.
