Hi all. Just working on Tchaikovsky's The Sick Doll which has the marking "marcato il basso". Do you think that applies to the whole of the left hand or would you consider it to refer strictly to the bass voice in the left hand? The bass voice is made up of minims (half notes) but there is also what you could call a tenor voice joining in after a quaver (8th note) rest.

If you are talking of the opus 39 n6, there is no such marking in the original. It is marked moderato with expression. This is something added by the editor. So i dont know what you refer to.

Now in terms of interpretation, some people do emphasize the bass line, so it is clear and well articulated. Personally i would not do that, i would play the first 2 notes at rather moderate volume and not too strongly (the downbeat needs to be accented though) and highlight gently the last quarter. Otherwise it creates a very mechanichal sound.

Yes, I'm talking about opus 39. That's interesting that it's not original.

The copy I'm working off has the last crotchet (quarter note) in each bar with a tenuto symbol. When I was first playing through it, I followed the tenuto markings and slightly emphasised those crotchets. But then I began to think about the marcato il basso direction...

This video looks to be the score with the same markings as I have, if you're interested.

Yes i have that tenuto mark as well, and that is also how i would play it.

It is probably coming from the old Schirmer edition. All the urtext modern editions are marked moderato , with expression. No marcato il basso. It may be either an editor addition or a marking which Tchaikowsky wrote and revised in the printed editions.
