There are many old Belarus uprights in Bulgaria because they were the cheapest piano available during the communist era. IMO they are consistently one of the worst pianos I’ve played. Many school/institution/kindergarten pianos here are Belarus and many parents bought them for their kids, so I’ve played lots of them. I even think the “Belarus” name became a synonym for a trash piano, for instance in a conversation you can hear “that’s a quality German piano, not some Belarus...”

Hmmm....I wonder if they can get these BVK certified as 100% Belarus then.

We had Belarus uprights in Scotland but they were branded something else. They were not very good pianos. I know that the conservatoires in Russia and the rest of the USSR had some good teaching pianos and performance pianos, I know that Steinways were allowed in, and that there were Blüthners of various quality, but I also know that some of the practice instruments that some of the world's finest piano students had to practice on were absolutely terrible. It amazes me, actually.

Any products except for the military-industrial in the USSR were of very poor quality. The state never thought the common man about . But there have been exceptions, I suppose. That piano "BELARUS" sounds decent right so?

Indeed, that’s not bad at all. I believe the bad reputation probably comes from the fact these pianos in Bulgaria were used in institutions and were never tuned or maintained, while being banged a lot every day. A few pianos can withstand such an abuse.

So... the big question everyone will ask is, are these pianos made in Belarus or are they imported?

Hi Maximillyan-

I hope too that LadyBird is right and the new Belarus reflects the quality craftsmanship that is available locally. Finally! Other ex-Soviet countries like Estonia and USSR controlled Czechoslovakia which became the Czech Republic, are now producing wonderful instruments so hopefully the Belarus will produce quality uprights for folks in Eastern Europe, Russia, and all the former members of the USSR.

I wish them all the best!

I hope too that will be so. Lukashenka's regime will fall and Belarus will free
