I'm almost through with this book and recommend it very highly. The personalities of great teachers (Goldenweiser, Igumnov, Neuhaus and so many others) and great pianists and violinists, some of whom were classmates of the author(Ashkenazy, Berman, Davidovitch, Sofronitzky, Gilels, etc.) is beautifully revealed.

This book was published in 1985 so I'm guessing others have read it. What did you think about it?

Is he still alive? I met him the summers of 2008 and 2009 and played for him twice each time. Great pianist, teacher, and a down-to-earth individual.

I need to read the book, btw

According to his Wiki bio he is still alive and was born in 1929. Can you tell us a little more about your lessons with him? I think you would like his book a lot.

I met Mr. Paperno and his wife once in Chicago at a record launch. Lovely couple from the old country, so it seemed. But of course the old country for them was postwar Russia. He is a survivor of the brutal Russian performance artist system, and Russian anti-semitism, and in the book you can sense the bleakness of what he went through.

That stamps a person. We in the West hardly have a clue about this brutal society which produced so many superior classical musicians.

Sorry I never answered your question, pianoloverus. I’ll go into more detail later this evening.

But I just saw on Facebook that he passed away this past Sunday. No official report or article, but confirmed by a former student of his.

Rest in peace.
