Any technician ever seen the soundboard covered (nice mesh same color as piano )?
I’ve never seen that—is that like a damper ? or should I remove it?
It’s a Yamaha U 1 E series .Thank you

That is usually an aftermarket addition that people add if the piano is placed where people can see the back. It has no noticeable effect on the sound, so you can remove it or leave it as you like. It will also keep junk from getting stuck behind the soundboard.

Also, it could be a humidity control cover as part of a complete Dampp-Chaser install...

The school where I take lessons has those covers on a few pianos that are used for plays and performances, they're especially useful if the lighting happens to hit them because they don't reflect and look so bright.

When we emigrated to Canada I brought my grand and an 80's U1 .These pianos crossed the equater to arrive in Canada. The grand was placed in a sitting room with fairly even humidty. The U1 was placed in a fairly large room which the technician warned had high humidty. It was also the coldest room in winter which dropped (in humidty) quite suddenly when temperatures dropped very low, or due to the interior heating.
He said one could place a board at the back of the piano to protect the soundboard.
We actually taped a plastic board at the back of the piano. The piano remained this way until we moved the instrument to a room with a more moderate humidty.
The piano sounded fine this way just a little softer.
So I do not know if this cover at the back of the piano was to make the piano more attractive or to protect the instrument.
