I have used brown wet-to-stick package paper to reinforce cracked keys. But you can add one final step. As the wet paper is drying, soak it with runny super glue. This will increase strength. Wait just long enough for the paper glue to "set" before adding super glue. Usually about two minutes.

BDB, thanks for that tip. I didn't know what a button was, before. I'll get some because a couple other keys are a bit damaged and they may help.

When I attempt to replace the button, what's the best way to remove the old one without breaking the key (more than it is)? I have buttons (didn't know it came as a 10-pack that has to be cut into pieces!) and can shape to fit, but is the glue holding the originals to the keys very strong, or is it likely to separate with some pressure?

It is probably hide glue, and if you tap on the glue joint with a chisel, it will probably come undone.
