It's entirely possible that the plate was destined for Hamburg and ended up in New York.

If the seller hasn’t seen a Hamburg Steinway in 10 years, that could account for them being absolutely dead wrong. It is a NY D that was used in the concert department. Those pianos have the serial number painted over and the new 3 digit CD number applied to the plate and lid. There were pianos in the late 80’s that had the Hamburg Steinway action manufactured by Renner installed here in NY. That is the most likely scenario here. It is not a hybrid. It is a NY D.

I don’t see how a 1992 D from either NY or DE would fetch $79k.

I don’t see how a 1992 D from either NY or DE would fetch $79k. Not without a new action, pin block, strings, and the case refinished.... Steinway D's that come up for sale tend to be pretty beaten up.

However, it has a Made in Hamburg German mark on the plate.

That said, the "made in Hamburg" badge could be from a different piano altogether. I don't remember pianos from that era having these Hamburg and New York badges on them

More likely, since the plates are all cast in Ohio, a plate originally made for Hamburg ended up in New York.
