If that is the way you want to think about it, I am sure he would have been fine with that. Lots of music is gimmicky, with the composer or performer pulling gimmicks out of his or her own bag of tricks, for whatever perpose.

He didn't. The only tempo marking, I believe, is the title itself. The current performers in Germany chose that tempo, which if you think about it may not actually be as slow as possible. They may be rushing.

He no doubt shortened beats symmetrically and played it at the piano.John Cage knew what he was doing ., I am sure of that. However only God could could experience this piece as it
is , perhaps that explains this churches commitment to the piece. I mean the spiritual ,philosophical aspects to the piece.
We live in a "goal oriented society"., This goes beyond that. Perhaps Buddhists understand this piece better than we do ?

According to the Wikipedia article on John Cage's "As Slow As Possible" (ASLSP), a typical piano performance of ASLSP lasts 20 to 70 minutes. So the version of the piece being played on an organ in Germany is stretching out the time scale by over a factor of 5 million.

I suppose these are the chords performed so far ?
(since it does not take years to listen to, it must be speeded up as well.)
I admire Cages faith in his devotees!

Lol — very reasonable at 20- 70 min.

I’m sure I also have it for piano and flute duet. ... and maybe for piano and tuba.
I’ll look through my scores.

I tried to google SLSP music, but apart from She is so perfect, and SLSP music playlists, I didn't find anything that explained the meaning of SLSP. Anybody here who can tell me what it is?

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

Do you mean ASLSP, the title of the Cage piece under discussion? If so it's an abbreviation for the phrase "As SLow aS Possible."

Larry.

hi folks--I'm guessing that, given Cage's elasticity of word meanings, and relative interpretations of language in general, that "slow" and "possible" (and maybe "as") can mean anything. So it seems there is no reason why slow could not mean "finish this piece in 30 seconds or less". There doesn't seem to be anything about this in the score I've seen, and that would be as slow as possible for some people.

Somewhat related are Schumann's "as fast as possible", and then later "faster".

Then there's the possiblilty that one's preparation to play ASLSP takes their entire life--that's where I am at present.

Manuscript is better.

One of John Cage's projects was to collect samples of manuscripts of 269 various composers and publish them. It is called Notations and a pdf is available on-line somewhere. I have it on my computer. I think the original book is quite valuable now. It was published in 1969.

Interesting BDB ! Not that I can afford or need to buy.
Is this a collection of well known American avant-garde and very modern music ? Contemporaries of John Cage I
suppose ?
