There are longer YT videos, like hours’ long compilations, that have ads interspersed within the video. I don’t know why some have them and some don’t, but I think the more popular a video, the likelier that it will have a couple of ads within the video itself.

I always have some kind of background music playing while I’m working on my computer, such as from this particular channel:

relaxdaily

It plays for 2.5 hrs and has 88 million views. Something like this will have ads interspersed within the video. The ads don’t bother me that much as I use it as background music but if I wanted to play music without ads, I use Spotify (to which I already subscribe) or I would upgrade to YouTube Premium. Unfortunately, neither are free.

That finally drove me insane (clearly not a long journey). Upgraded and been happy ever since ("happy" for a generally miserable, cynical misanthrope anyway).

That's weird.

For the record, I use, and always have used, for the most part, "UBLOCK ORIGIN". Maybe give that one a try.

https://adblockplus.org get's rid of most ads on youtube, in both chrome and safari on a mac...or you could use 4k video downloader and make your own local playlists in VLC...

I never use youtube without adblock. And it makes me sad when others don't, because I put so much effort into making playlists with key relationships and the work is all lost if an ad interrupts:(

+1. Radio 3 is wonderful, and so is radio in general. On youtube one is limited by one's own algorithm, and the names that come up most often in search are not necessarily the best- at least one misses out on so much by being limited to them.
I also love being back in school because it means having access to Naxos. And the great plus there is that you can often read the CD booklets, a wonderful resource.

It seems to vary with the day. Sometimes you don't get any ad for an hour, sometimes every 5 minutes. Sometimes I get 2 or even 3 in a row. Some you can click away after 4 secs, some have to play full length. Sometimes I leave the computer alone, and when I come back they are still playing an ad, so some ads seem really long or maybe they have follow-up ads or so.

Google's main job is collecting user data. So it probably also depends on the profile they made of you (age, income, interest, activity on social media, computer type, screen size, etc)

It seems that they sometimes they ask you how your experience was but that seems mostly after a non-ad video.

I don't know why, but I never get ads on youtube. I have a gmail account, and upload videos to youtube, but I don't pay them. I use the Brave browser, with shields on.

It might be inverse related to how well they have profiled you.

Maybe they can give less, more specific ads if you are logged in and well tracked.
Where if they can't trace you they revert to a more ad-bombing strategy.

Never heard of Brave browser, why did you pick it Sam?

This. And I use youtube-dl to download videos that I might want to archive for posterity.

There are rumors floating around that youtube might enable drm on all their videos in the not-too-distant future. So if there is some video that you really enjoy, you might want to consider archiving it before the only way to experience it becomes the youtube one.

I do worry about security - it's supposed to stop sites from tracking you. I also pay for protonmail. It seems I have to keep my gmail account in order to upload to youtube, but I quit using it for email.

Maybe I shouldn't worry about it and just embrace the internet of things. I can go out, crank up my truck, and before I pull out of the driveway, my phone flashes up a message "19 minutes to grocery store, traffic is light." How did it know I was going to the grocery store? It's very creepy...

OTOH, you might like this feature in YT (besides all the ActionKid videos :-)
