Hi,

Would you know what is the difference between the Yamaha "P116 T" and the "P116" ?
My "old" piano is still at my parent's ; it is a P116, probably made in Japan in 1988 based on its serial number. But the model on the frame reads "P166 T" so I am wondering for distinguishes it from a P116.

Thanks!

Franck

Did you buy the piano in France?

I was thinking the "T" could mean it was assembled at the Yamaha Thomaston Georgia (USA) plant (now closed), but perhaps those models had the "T" in the serial number rather than the model number.

There is a used piano dealer in the metro Atlanta Ga area that is originally from France, and still does business in France and other parts of Europe. It is possible he could have shipped the piano from Atlanta to France and sold it there. He buys, sells and moves/ships pianos internationally.

I'm curious to know what the "T" means myself.

Yes, Joseph, this Piano was bought in France (in Brittany) 30 years or so ago.

That's why I was wondering if the piano was sold in France originally, because if it was, it's unlikely that it was made in Georgia, but if it was purchased in the USA, it might be a Georgia piano. Personally I'd find it unlikely that a dealer would ship a Yamaha upright from the USA to France since there were virtually identical models made at Kemble in London, and also ones shipped from Japan directly, but unlikely doesn't mean impossible or unheard of!

If the P116 was produced by Kemble in the UK in 1988 it will have an E at the front of the serial number.

Well, it's unlikely to be a Georgia USA piano, but perhaps it *could* be. It's feasible that some American-assembled pianos were shipped over to Europe?

Have you tried checking the serial number or asking Yamaha about it?

So I asked Yamaha France:
-It is indeed a piano built in Japan in 1988 for the European market
-The "T" is related to an (unspecified) specific finish

Mystery (partially) solved. Thanks!

Now I need to decide what to do with it. It does not seem practical to move it to my apartment in Paris and to retrofit a silent system). So I will probably buy a digital piano as I can no longer live without a piano ... and we'll see!

Sounds good. Glad you got the info you were looking for.

I think the Yamaha uprights that were assembled at the plant in Thomaston Georgia (USA) has a "T" in the serial number rather than the model number.

All the best!

Yeah retrofitting a silent system into it is going to be EXPENSIVE! Best just have a digital and the P116 and enjoy it.

I wish I had an apartment in Paris!

Most likely a Kawai CA79 after having spent some time playing a few. Thanks!
