Having recently purchased a Yamaha C2X, I am having to explain to my non-piano friends what is it that I just did for my mid-life crisis, so that we can joyfully compare the magnitude of each others' mid-life craziness.

As a spin-off to pianoloverus' piano-watches comparison thread (http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/3006476/1.html), I thought I'd start one on comparing piano and car brands, as more people drive cars than wear watches these days.

Starting the list below, roughly based on (https://www.pianobuyer.com/article/a-map-of-the-market-for-new-pianos-ratings/). I frankly don't know much about cars either so my list is pretty empty. Hoping for other people to chime in, both on the piano and car list. I look forward to compiling and posting at the end!

Bechstein -->
Blüthner -->
Bösendorfer -->
Fazioli -->
Steingraeber & Söhne -->
Steinway & Sons --> Mercedes?
Grotrian -->
Estonia -->
Shigeru Kawai -->
Mason & Hamlin -->
Petrof -->
Schimmel -->
Seiler -->
Yamaha --> Toyota-Lexus (large Japanese company)
Baldwin -->
Boston -->
Brodmann -->
Cunningham -->
Young Chang --> Hyndai (best Korean brand)
Samick --> Kia (other other Korean brand)
Hailun -->
Heintzman -->

To jog people's memory, well known car brands (at least in Canada) in alphabetical order include:
Alpha romeo, Acura, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Bugatti, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Hyndai, GMC, Honda, Hyndai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lincoln, Maserati, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes, Mini, Mitshubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota-Lexus, Volkswagen, Volvo.

A side comment on taming a new piano: Playing scales all along the piano (as opposed to the usual four-octave ones) is both destabilizing and hard workout for the torso!

Congratulations on your new C2X piano. Its a very nice instrument.(I do not remember you buying this piano) Wishing you many happy hours ! On a side note the piano and watch relationship was sort of........odd , pictures of watches on the keyboard seemed unnecessarly boastful and materialistic.(actually bizarre ) I was not the only one who thought that. At least 2 other members thought the same. However I took part because it was so unusual.
Perhaps too much of living with Covid everywhere 🤔 So per understandable ?
Cars and pianos -have more of a history of discussion here on
PW so for some people the relationship may be more comfortable.

Thanks, Lady Bird. smile I posted my purchase on the new piano forum here (http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...e-joy-of-piano-musical-chair.html#UNREAD). Will post recordings there, too, soon. Just need to figure out how to do that.

I did a quick search but couldn't find a compendium of piano-car comparison, but maybe there already are? If yes, don't want to reinvent the wheel - hopefully someone with better search skills will point me to it and save people time.

Fazioli --> Pagani, a small italian sports car manufacturer, producing ridiculously expensive cars of the highest quality and performance
Schimmel --> Has to be Volkswagen, German, high quality but (please don't hit me) a bit boring
Petrof --> Skoda? Great quality, affordable.
Steingräber --> Maybe Bugatti, exotic, not well known but certainly excellent.
Bösendorfer --> Rolls-Royce. You rarely see one, it's exclusive

I'd pair Steinway with Porsche, great stuff, a market leader and a history of quality problems? wink

I’ll take a small stab.

Fazioli————> Lamborghini
Schimmel———> Audi
Bosendorfer————> Bentley
Estonia —————> Land Rover (Might be more BMWish)
Steinway ——————> Mercedes

I’ve just realized I’ve driven too few vehicles and haven’t tried enough pianos. frown

Casio Privia PX-330
Life is too short to not have a great piano.

That Prelude and Fugue was beautifully played. That CX2 has a really beautiful tone.Not bright for me at all and such a well balanced expressive instrument !
Actually I had forgotten about about my suggestion that everyone should learn some Bach to help with the Covid blues
but I remember now that is why ,I revisited a Fugue I used to love playing.
It was a wonderfull way to begin a "new musical life" with a wonderful grand piano.
As for cars and pianos I suggest a Porsche for your piano !
Perhaps I should learn a new Bach piece at the moment....

Actually Ferrari contacted Shultze and Pollman pianos to produce a piano to match the Ferrari red in thier cars.Here you can see all about it.Scroll down to "PIANOS" to read all about it and Schulze-Pollmann instruments.
So these brands are obviosly much admired in Italy.
No scrolling needed it actually takes you right to the special red one of that brand.
( Prelude and Fugue in RED )

Lady Bird, Thank you for that kind review. Do I see a Piano World Bach-a-thon in sight? ;-)

Yes, the C2X feels like a Porsche to me right now although, in real life, I have always said that my mid-life crisis sports car would be an Audi TT. That was before I decided to and realized that I could dream to own a grand piano. I never looked back, and I am soooooo~~~~~ glad that I chose to buy a piano instead of a stupid car!!!! (I don't even drive much, living in a central pedestrian friendly area and being a mediocre driver at best.) I haven't stopped practicing all day, on and off, and not getting any work done, as I should. ;-) Feeling quite marvellous!

I would find it fascinating to learn what other forum member's cars are and which pianos they own - perhaps some interesting trends could be spotted.

blueviewlaguna, Those are very fine goods you own there. However, please note that my intention was to get some help from the Forum for an easy analogy between pianos and cars (a common commodity about which I know less than an average person) to be able to explain to my non-pianist friends the C2X I just purchased. Personally, I am not so interested in what cars the Piano World members own. May I invite you to start a separate thread for what you are looking for, if you please? Thank you.

C2X = Lexus GS350 F sport in my opinion. The 3.5 V6 is analogous to the 5'8" grand length, great all around size. Much like the C2X vs C2, the Lexus GS350 F should not be mistaken for a standard Lexus as its performance has been highly refined and geared towards an enthusiast that has already owned several high performance cars and has specific needs.

Apologize for the thread hijack wink

I haven't met any other steinway owners yet, but you might be right smile Steinway might well be the apple of pianos with all the brand building, etc.

The OP and Lady Bird have both expressed feelings about this hijack. I’ll add myself to the request this not continue.
