I just got a Yamaha P-515 and want to place it in front of a window so that I can have a view.

When I won’t use the piano I will cover it up with a black table cloth.

There is not much sun, if any in that area.

I thought I read somewhere it can dry up the keys grease or something?

Is this a bad for the piano?

Since you will keep it covered and it sounds like the window doesn't get much direct sunlight, I would think it should be fine. But I have seen what years of direct sunlight does for plastic and composite materials. Even the best quality materials can't withstand direct sunlight for very long.

In the market for a new digital piano

It depends on the view, too.

Is it a lush green, sea blue, rocky river, or brick wall view?

My P90 has been in front of the same north facing window for over 10 years with no ill effects. I cover the keys but not the body and I've not experienced any visible degradation of the plastic which actually kind of surprises me. You should check if the cover you're using blocks UV light. That would help if it was specifically designed to do that. Some clothing you buy now advertises if it blocks UV, maybe you can ask the vendor you bought the cover from.

You say your P-90 has been in front of the same window for 10 years; I believe that piano has seen too much -of the same- already.

Might I interest you in a P-515? It can give a well-deserved break to the P-90 standing lonesome by the north-facing window for ten years.

I believe in free range pianos, I'll let it out in the backyard later today.

The only (extremely major) problem: The Yamaha P-515 has wooden keys and synthetic ivory keytops, the P90 has plastic... everything.

Finally bought the P515

So yours is a ‘Trump wall’, you say;
it creates the perfect shade, you further say.

My view is the lonely edge of the Harlem river; for you see, I live in a van down by the -Harlem- river. frown

That depends on which side of the Wall you are on.

Just remember Pink Floyd:
"Tear Down the Wall

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

Serious now. I have had my DP by a window which gets some direct sunlight and after more years then I care to admit to the piano is fine.
