Hello,

I own a Kawai ES100 electric piano. I am learning Hammond organ style playing, and I have a Lester K rotary effect to help with this. However, the piano does not have drawbars. Is anyone aware of a unit that ideally has actual drawbars on, or has the next best thing such as a few presets, or some other way of creating this effect? I know this probably seems like a silly question and the obvious advice would be to buy a more suitable keyboard. However money is tight and I do like the Kawai for other playing styles, so any ideas would be most gratefully received. I have seen the Ferrofish B4000 which looks promising, but is a bit expensive for what I can afford.
Thank you for any ideas!
Adam

If you're willing to use the ES100 to control a Hammond simulation that runs on a computer:

. . . there are several VST's and stand-alone software organs that will do the job.

Some of them are free. Some are "naked VST's" which require player software (Kontakt, etc), some are standalone.

Google "drawbar organ VST" to get started. I think they'll be less expensive than the Ferrofish (which IMHO isn't overpriced).

Hi Charles,

Thank you very much for your reply and ideas. I will look at the VSTs as you suggest. Ideally it would be nice to have something external like a pedal or control system rather than use a computer, but it doesn't need to be as nice as the Ferrofish or contain a Leslie. I wondered if there is perhaps something that could add the harmonics over the top and give that general effect, as it is really the high notes to switch up to during a solo that I'm after.

Thanks again,
Adam

The Yamaha Reface YC would be cheaper than the Ferrofish. Also, if you happen to own an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, there are apps that will do what you want,

Hi Adam,

I absolutely love the sound of a Hammond B3 through a Leslie cab eventhough I'm far from being a good B3 player!!!

Do the ES110 keys feel ok to you when you're playing organ? I asked because I can't even begin to play organ on any of my digital pianos so I always need multiple keyboards - usually 3 or 4.

You can't add drawbars to your ES110 and using VSTs will require a computer or iPad. One of the best B3 VSTs right now is b3x; it's $299 for Windows, $129 for iPad. There are a couple other ones that are pretty good for $88 but all will require a PC or iPad. You can buy a used MIDI controller with drawbars to control your VSTs but I think you're trying to avoid doing that altogether.

I have an old Korg CX-3 that does an amazing B3. If you're in Southern California, you're welcome to borrow it. If not, see if you can find an used one near you. There are newer tonewheel organs out there but they're all over $2k. You may also be able to pick up something like a Casio XWP1 synth that has 9 drawbars and quite a few organ sounds for $200. I actually have 2 of these on top of each other for songs like a Whiter Shade of Pale.

Please feel free to pm me if I can help!
