It was David Bowie who I first heard making reference to this song. He said the melody didn't follow anything that he was familiar with, so I said I'd look it up.

The tune starts at 5:33 in the link below. I've been noodling around with the melody, but I'm not too sure about the chords. It's obviously a sort of base-chord thing that would be going on in the left hand. I wanted to think it was:

C - Bb - Am - Dm - Ab - C - G

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=330&v=MTyNgHTFDfM&feature=emb_title

But when I got to the Ab base note, it seemed as if the chord after it was something like (AbF). When I re-listened I began to wonder if that thing that sounded like (AbF) was being used as the chord part after every base note?

While I'm at it I'd like to know if anyone else knows of any other well known pieces that contain melodies that don't seem to follow any clear structure? With this it's quite hard to hear the chords under the melody. In fact it's easier to hear them when the frog is singing rather than the tuba.

Any help pwould be appreciated?

The Bb was a typo. That's meant to be:

C - G - Am - Dm - Ab - C - G

"Petya and the Wolf" by Prokofiev (1936). IMO there is some kind of influence.

This is a complete harmony, in the 4th bar is assumed.

C Gb| Am Dm | Fm Fm\Ab | (Dm7|b5| G G) |C Gb | Am Dm | Gm Fm | C ||

Thanks, but I don't know if I follow... especially that Gb that I've put in bold. There didn't seem to be that much going on to me.

Seeing as it is a base-chord thing that going on, if you could write the base note as just a note, & the notes of the chord part in brackets. For example a C major chord going to a Bb major would be as:

C (CEG) | Bb (BbDF)

That way you can specify exactly which triad you think the left hand is playing each time.

What about Gb?
BTW: every chord has a root at the bottom, except for Fm / Ab.

Perhaps, but I cannot follow?:

Would you kindly be able to write it out the way I can follow?:
