I have a customer with a Samick (Reidsohn) grand (1990). He has asked me to visit as he is finding the action becoming increasingly noisy. I tune the piano regularly and have not noticed anything previously. It is in good original condition and is used lightly. Has any one got any thoughts, ideas or experience of action noise on these models?

Have him demonstrate how and when he notices the noise. Since you say you don't notice it.

Depress two handfuls of keys slowly (silently) then abruptly let go. What you will hear is the mechanical sound of all the keys and action components re-setting. Every action has some noise, but certain actions are notorious (in my experience) for being extra loud.
It is not unusual for Korean and Chinese pianos to display lot of mechanical noise after some years. The reason is that the felts are of such a quality that they are somewhat firm to begin with, and then become increasingly harder with time. When I isolate the components, it lets me see how much noise is coming from the knuckle, the wippen heel cloth and the back rail cloth.

Replacing these three items and doing the necessary regulation will work wonders, but it is not a small job. Needling the offending felts like crazy can give some temporary reprieve but it is not a long term solution.
