The statistics show that the death rate for Covid is significantly higher than for "regular" flu.

The statistics show that compared to prior years we have an excess of deaths.

Arguing about how accurate the definitions are will not significantly change those statistics.

I have not talked to a single medical service provider who thinks getting infected with Covid to "get over it" is a wise step.

This pandemic has upended most medical practices so as to reduce their incomes. There is no "profit" incentive to continuing the disease for them.

While the war took four years to kill an estimated 17 million soldiers and civilians, the Spanish Flu killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million in eighteen months. No-one knows the exact number. It got called Spanish Flu because Spain, being neutral in the war, reported accurate figures, whereas other countries disguised their losses, so it looked as if the death toll was much worse in Spain.

Scarily, it was the 'second wave' of the Spanish Flu that proved much more deadly. The springtime occurrence seemed like ordinary seasonal flu, but the autumn second wave started killing millions. There was also a third wave, a bit less severe in terms of deaths.

David,
If you research into this further, you will find that the Spanish Flu was a man made medical blunder that escaped . 1911 was the very first mandatory vaccination of the military. They were afraid of Typhoid. The vaccination is what spread it. It was called the Spanish Flu as a cover up. There are many pictures of the thousands dying upon first vaccination in army barracks. They then tried 4 further vaccinations to stop it, each time getting worse until they lost control. The blunder actually created 2 new strains of diseases. Hypertyphoid and vaccinitus.

Just because you use your google fingers, and find an article or two, does not constitute research.
As it turns out, upon real research, there are time dated photos, army records, and testimonies of the Doctors and Nurses.

Two identical twin Doctors, Chris and Xander Van Tulleken have persented a number of TV shows in the UK. A few nights ago they presented a documentary Surviving the Virus: My Brother and Me.

It showed Chris, in the first full heat of the pandemic, moving back into front-line ward work from his job as an infectious diseases specialist at University College Hospital, London. The documentary followed the treatment of desperately ill patients, and also looked at the emerging long-term effects of the illness.

Dr Xander Van Tulleken had already had COvid-19 and apparently recovered from it, but was experiencing systemic after-effects, including bouts of rapid heartbeat (paroxysmal tachycardia). A very severe and continuing bout sees him admitted to hospital where his brother Chris is working, with a pulse racing at 170 beats per minute.

In an extremely powerful and moving few moments, the documentary shows Xander's heart being stopped, so as to administer a shock that will re-start it in normal rhythm. This is done with his twin, Dr. Chris, tearfully watching as Xander flatlines for several seconds.

Later in the documentary there is discussion of the fact that no-one knows if these after-effects are going to be permanent, of if not, how long they may last.

You might want to open it and read the sources of the research.

I think I'm right in saying that I'm the only one posting here who is working on the front line, and have witnessed many deaths from COVID-19 at close quarters (much closer than I'd like). I'm used to death and suffering as part of my job, but this is of a different order of magnitude.

Those who think all governments (apart from Brazil perhaps?) are over-reacting should ponder what it's like when someone in his fifties is put to sleep in order to be intubated (because he's unable to get enough O2 in without artificial ventilation), knowing that he has a 50% chance of never waking up again.

As for care homes, yes, it's possible for all their residents to be completely shielded from the virus. Test everyone - residents and carers - twice over a few days, then keep them all isolated until the pandemic dies away. Obviously, all the carers have to be imprisoned along with all the residents, and food and medicines have to be brought in to them. And absolutely no visitors, unless they too are tested twice beforehand and stay isolated after negative tests until after their visit - for each visit.

I agree with your assessment of COVID-19. And, more importantly: Thank you for your work on the front line. I hope that there are people in your life that are taking care of you as well. <3

Well this certainly sounds most concerning, and very tragic.

Out of interest, what's the percentage chance statistically of this happening to a 50 year old who contracts Covid? Surely figures that we must by now have.

Or a better (and more workable) idea might be for the NHS not to chuck loads of infected people out of the hospital and in to the care homes, infecting all of the frail elderly people that are there, in order to free up hospital beds for a "wave" of Covid hospital patients that never materialises. Perhaps if we didn't make that mistake again, it might help.

Most of the infections in UK care homes were brought in by staff, after visitors were banned.

Thanks for your thoughts, and David Boyce's too.

At the hospital, we look after each other........though unfortunately, a few of us have also succumbed.

I can't say which method provided "most" of the infections, as you'd have to provide statistics. Although in both cases it looks pretty damning.

My point still stands. It is well documented now that hospitals moved patients from hospitals in to care homes without always testing them for Covid, in a hurry. This is widely documented as begin one of the main reasons the care homes took such a hit. Along with your reasons as well, of course. Making it doubly as bad.

Could they have known? Was anyone really to blame? I don't know. But I do know it was for nought. The tidal wave never came. A tragedy.

Feel free to chuckle, Zaphod. I'd even go further than jeffcat and say: The "use" (for lack of a better word) of animals in general is a problem, be it the use of so-called farm animals, be it the use of wild animals. It's a major cause of new diseases, which are in many cases zoonoses (the Corona virus included).

However, this discussion may not belong in a piano forum.

And I fully respect your opinion, and your right to express it. The difference between you and Jeffcat is that you don't feel it necessary to put other people's opinions down in order to express your own.

So - good for you, is what I say.

Typhoid diseases are bacterial infections. Flu's are viral infections. So if the Typhus vaccine given to WW1 soldiers caused the Spanish Flu, somehow they got viruses in the vaccine. Somehow I doubt this.

The important thing to remember is Typhoid came from Chickens.

Just as the Flu came from Ducks (Aquatic fowl), Smallpox came from Camel Pox, HIV came from SIV (Monkeys), etc, pretty much all the big ones.

All major pandemics are rooted in zoonosis. Animal transmission due to severely altered habitat.

CAFO farming is the most egregious.

I couldn't agree more! It amazes and saddens me just how many people search for the facts that support what they want to believe and consider this to be science.
