I just bought my first grand piano! It's a 1987 Baldwin Artist series L. Does anyone know where it was made? Baldwin had a few different factories at the time and I'm wondering if anyone knows which one(s) were making the L.

Thanks!

I am pretty sure that would be Truman, Arkansas.

Congratulations on your Baldwin L Artist Grand!

I'd say BDB is correct regarding the Truman Arkansas Baldwin factory.

I'm a fan of the US made Baldwin Artist grands, and own a late 1990s Baldwin R.

Yes, congratulations! And I think BDB is correct about Truman, AR.

I just dug this up about Baldwins

"Consider that a grand piano may be nine feet long," he says. "That entire piano is built to within 1/32" or 1/16" specifications. Everything is done by hand—that's true of the verticals as well—and each grand piano has a book associated with it. Every operator who touches the piano signs that book. The idea is to ensure accountability—and to instill pride. That record is kept for posterity."

Somewhere out there is a book with the names of the people who hand built my piano!

Here's the link, it also says they manufactured airplane wings in WW2

Ben
Congrats on the great piano 😊 hopefully, someone here can point you in the right direction to hunt for your Baldwin book! If not, see if Truman AR has s historical society .

Congrats again! Love the satin ebony finish! My Yamaha C7 is satin ebony. My Baldwin R is satin cherry, but not real red.

Thought I'd share your pics here in the thread for you...

Everybody on here is so nice! Thanks for sharing my joy everybody!

The shop also said I get to pick a bench - adjustable solo bench or duet bench - this is going to be for my home recording studio and I'm leaning towards a duet bench. Any words of advice would be very much welcome.

The duet bench will, of course, be much heavier to move; but if I had a choice of free ones, I would choose it. No duet partner? I can share with my cat 😽
