I am trying to get a hold of the score for a piece called Préce by Alberto Nepomuceno, a Brazilian composer. A piano solo version is available on IMSLP but apparently the original was for piano and strings, and there are piano/cello and piano/violin versions, so I'm trying to get a copy of either of those versions. But I can't seem to find it anywhere (I even tried to search on Amazon Brazil but there's probably a better site, however, I don't speak Portuguese so it's challenging. The word Prece means Prayer apparently, so I searched for that title as well but can't find it.

I've found a record at the library of congress
https://memory.loc.gov/service/music/eadxmlmusic/eadpdfmusic/2003/mu003004.pdf

Which includes this info:
BOX-FOLDER 3/6 Prece (obra posthuma) Photocopy of printed piano-violin score
Note: original piano-cello score, arranged for piano-violin by Lambert Ribeiro

I actually sent an email to the Library of Congress but I don't think they send out PDFs of musical scores in their collection (do they??)

I suppose the violin part is the same as the top line of the piano solo version?? Here's the piano solo version:
https://imslp.org/wiki/Pr%C3%A9ce%2C_Op.1_No.1_(Nepomuceno%2C_Alberto)

Anyway, thanks in advance if anyone can help me find this! smile

Hi Shiro,

Yes you can definitely order PDF copies of scores that are out of copyright from the LOC:

https://www.loc.gov/duplicationservices/order/

Oh wow, thanks Mel! I don’t know how I missed that! It’s a little difficult to tell how they’re operating during Covid (and it’s also difficult to tell what the fee will be!) but I will try to find out.

It says turnaround time is 4 weeks. Considering that my violin friend and I can’t get together right now (because Covid) anyway, I’ll try to order it (as long as it’s not super expensive!)

Thanks again!!

You''re very welcome, SK.

The Library is closed to the public, but they have staff to fulfill their online services at loc.gov

The librarians are extremely helpful and pleasant so don't hesitate to click on 'Ask a Librarian' and let him or her know that this is your first time ordering a pdf. Include the catalog number, composer, name of piece, for piano and violin, number of pages if you know (I think it's 4), publication date (1935). The price is about $15.00 for a pdf of a 5 or 10 page score.

The delivery time is always at least 1 month for all the big national libraries, like the British Library, BNF (Paris), the German libraries, etc.

Mel, thanks for all the info! I found out that the Boston Public Library has it as well, so now I'm trying to see if my library can get it through interlibrary loan. If not, then I'll try the Library of Congress.

Auntie Lynn, sorry if I was unclear. IMSLP was the first place I tried, they only have the piano solo version (which I linked in my original post). As far as I could tell, based on the opus numbers, they don't have this in its original. Are you familiar with this composer?

I had a look at the piano solo version. It looks to me that you could (pretty easily) play it with a violinist. The top line in the RH appears to double what the violin would have been playing. The piano part would then be played pretty much the way it is written while OMITTING the melody note. It's only two pages, so your violinist wouldn't even have a page turn to do. Alternatively you could use a notation program and make a part for the violin from the top line of what's written.

PS - no time to look it up now, but there's a recent thread somewhere here on PW about playing pop songs from the usual arrangements which doubled the melody line in the piano. Experienced players, working with experienced singers, never play them that way. They work on elaborating the chords (or just playing them) while the singer focuses on the melody. This is analogous to what I propose you do.
