Modern U Rocks!

That and the VSL Bösendorfer Imperial are the only two I use now. Every other VST I have is just taking up space.

God bless,
David

David, do you have the Ravenscroft? Why do you like the Modern U over the Ravenscroft? What amp/speakers do you use for playback?

I have Ravenscroft and love it... The Italian, American, and German are not as good (I have them all).

I don't care for the tone of the Ravenscroft.

The Modern U feels more like a real piano to play compared to all of VI Labs other offerings (and I have them all). It's a very fun and expressive piano to play and makes me feel like I'm behind a real Modern U in my living room.

I play it through my N1X and studio monitors.

God Bless,
David

I was going to grab the Pearl (Impact Soundworks). Does the Modern U compare well to the Pearl? Was basing this from the sale they had and from reviews on YT from Simeon.

IMHO Simeon is great reviewer if you are keyboard player, but not for classical piano players.

David, are you still alternating between VSL and Modern U? Does Modern U works better with an intimate style?

I am.

I like the VSL Bösendorfer Imperial for intimate pieces. The Modern U is very direct with a more pronounced attack. It really feels like the strings and hammers are pointed right at you (which they are).

It has a nice dynamic range (not as much as the Imperial), but I would choose the Imperial for softer pieces.

The Modern U really shines with Jazz, Blues, contemporary praise/Gospel, etc.

God Bless,
David

So after playing around with the Modern U for the very first time ill share my very early impressions.

The good:

* Mic positions. - I like mic positions. I think it's important to have a choice to get the sound you want, and matches to your speakers or headphones, taste, type of music, etc. This vi got plenty of choice with six mic positions, which you can mix up to a maximum of 3. No complaints at all.

* Playability. - An important one, it's great. I already owned ravenscroft before, so actually I expected nothing less, VI labs knows how to make a playable vi, and it shows again with this Modern U.

* Interface and options. - It all feels more a bit more refined than what I remember from ravenscroft. I really like the graphic that shows the mic positions when you choose them. There are presets, which is nice, but I don't think very much of most of them, and would have liked to have more.

* Sordino pedal - I love the sordino pedal! Much better than the soft pedal to me, really nice.

The bad:

* Voicing? - Of course, no vi is perfect, so I guess there had to be one thing I didn't like. To me it seems like a range of keys starting from the crossover point is noticably softer, and makes the crossover point quite noticable. The key range from about B3 to G3 sounds a bit too soft/mellow, it feels like this range of keys have a bit less power to them. I suspect the hammers on these keys are voiced a bit too soft on the piano itself, but who knows maybe it has something to do with the recording, I don't know. My U3 is more even, I never noticed something like this when playing it.

So, other than that one negative that I think might have to do with the voicing of the recorded piano itself, I'm very happy with it so far. It's a very nice upright vi, very playable, very different compared to all those concert grands (obviously), and I have to agree with Boboulus's statement that at this price, it's a steal.

Conclusion: No regrets.

Try this preset if you get a chance. This has been my preferred sound for a while now.

Here is my velocity curve/gain setting. Of course you have to find what's right for your controller.

Thanks David, I will try those!

My controller is a vpc-1, so I just used the vpc-1 setting so far, it's very responsive. Im seriously impressed with the playability and feeling of realism of this libary, and I think I already understand why you keep coming back to it! It's really a joy to play.

I wonder what is your experience with that one negative i stated, the range of keys at the crossover point that seem to be softer/mellower to me?

In my early impressions i forget to mention the tone itself. It's a nice tone, it sounds cleaner than my 1986 u3, which also has a great tone, it does sound different, but at the same time very recognizable. More modern, i guess!

I know what you mean. The sedated lower register (except when played mf or f) compared to the crisp upper brings out a contrast that appears to be less even across the spectrum.

That's why this piano sample is not my preferred sound for all music.

The Bösendorfer Imperial is very even across the entire register, but I don't always feel like playing a 9 1/2 foot concert grand. Nor is it the best choice for some pieces (imo).

God Bless,
David

Well, I did also fall on this offer!. I have got both the Modern U and the Ravenscroft 275 (so I have got an extra 10% over an already nice 30% discount thumb)

Here it is late today, I will install and play them tomorrow, using the VPC1 as the controller 3hearts

But I needed to tell you, as I knew of that sale because of this thread, and who else would understand my joy with piano VIs, made just of 1s and 0s smile
