Looking for the next step up from our Yamaha DGX650 keyboard.

I can't often play during the day when my wife and kids are playing on our main piano... so the ep is nice that I can control the volume and not bother the family at night when I'm working at beginning improv grin

However, I'm at the point where I'm really struggling with the transition between playing on the acoustic vs ep especially with the action difference when crushing notes in jazz / blues. I thought the yamaha had a small set of keys, but just measured it and it's almost exactly the same size end to end of the white keys (48 1/2" vs 48 3/16") but I think my issue is the top inside corner of the ebony on the yamaha is 9/16" vs. 3/4" on our acoustic, and I have thick fingers.

My piano teacher recommended checking out a casio privia 160. Also would love some other comparisons to check out as a step up in action / wider gaps between the ebony.

I,m with you on that. A particularly annoying trait, it didn't affect my playing since I never played between the ebonies on that instrument. Not sure if i do now, either.
Just about anything will be better, but if you have thick fingers, it may not improve things for you much.
You'll need to try stuff out.

The PX-160 does have triple sensor action but it's not particularly good action, I would reccomend maybe a YDP-S54 for better action. GH3 is a nice intermediate action. NWX on the P-515 is the next step after GH3 action. YDP-S54 is $1300, P-515 is $1500 (usually $1275 with coupons). Personally I would recommend the P-515, it is all around an excellent digital piano, but the YDP-S54 has the same features but lacking wooden keys, escapement and front facing speakers. In both pianos you would get an upgrade with the piano sound, too (Pure CF vs. CFX). It would be awesome if you could share with us your budget.

Finally bought the P515

I don't have a firm budget yet since I know so little about the options. Hopefully under $2,000 should be possible... but the more information I can gather, the better chance I have at making a convincing argument to the boss! I'm very open to used options as well.

I stopped in at a local dealer today, who only had a few over $3k ep's in stock. He said they just had their best month ever - guess all the people stuck at home decided to take up hobbies! He did have a couple of Nord Stage pianos that were ok, but a little on the light side for me. We have a Weinbach grand (made by Petrof) that I believe has an action on the heavier side and is what I like. He didn't have any yamaha's in stock, but told me I might like the cp's or an mx88 - but he hasn't tried the mx yet.

I'll start researching the options you mentioned there to understand the different actions available

I looked into the 515 and read up on the actions on the pianodreamers website for some good detail - and certainly seems like a good one to check out for those of us who like firmer actions. Any hot tips on those coupons you mentioned?

A lot of medium sized piano stores have online sites. I purchased my P-515 from Ken Stanton Music for 15% off.

OK - thank you. If it's not too much bother - could you send the measurement of the distance between the top inside corner - corner of the (two step) ebonies? My dgx650 is almost 1/4" narrower than the acoustic @ 9/16" vs 3/4".
