I'm watching a french one called The piano teacher, starring Isabelle Huppert. I don't know how it will evolve but at least the beggining is interesting regarding piano.

Do you know any others?

La Tourneuse de pages (The Page-Turner)

Don't watch it if you rely on one.

Alternatively, switch to an iPad.......

Otherwise, watch The Pianist instead.

There are quite a few french movies with piano, i dont know why. An old one is Shoot on the pianist with Charles Aznavour, there is also "Fauteuil d'orchestre", "Au bout des doigts", ...

And there is the wonderful movie of Jane Campion, The piano lesson.

This is another one of these recurring PW thread subjects. For example, there was a long thread with some good stuff in it here: http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/204483/1.html

I've never seen the "shades of grey" movies, what role does piano play in them?

Impromptu IIRC is about Chopin, Hugh Grant plays Chopin.

Then there's Immortal Beloved, in which Gary Oldman is brilliant as Beethoven.

What else... I second the recommendations already made, The Piano is a great movie, but the ending was a little too intense for me (or rather, the penultimate ending??). The Pianist is also wonderful.

Oh there's also Shine, which is based on the true story of David H... something...

Isn't there a documentary about ... piano competitions? They Came to Play? (Maybe it's about the Van Cliburn?)

There's also a Japanese movie, the English title is A Forest of Wool and Steel, it's based on a book about an apprentice piano tuner. TBH the book was pretty boring...

There are others but I'm not thinking of them....

In the 50 Shades of Grey movies Christian Grey plays the piano to express his feelings when he is upset or anxious or trying to avoid dealing with something.

There's also Alien Covenant, where the "boss bad guy" has his android play Wagner's Entry of the Gods into Valhalla to set up the theme of the movie (attempting to be God) and also as a way to introduce the android who forms a central part of the story. The boss then critiques the performance as "anemic without the orchestra". The end of the movie then uses an orchestral version of the same thing when setting the stage for the next sequel, with the unspoken inference that the bad guys are not anemic any more and will get you the next time.

Thank you for your suggestions. I just finished watching The piano teacher. Very intense and twisted plot.

I agree!

Which reminds me, I tried to play The Crave when this movie first came out, but I couldn't really get it to a decent tempo. Maybe now's a good time to revisit it...

There was a slightly more recent relevant thread over here. From that thread, I will mention my post of an interesting 17-minute short film with English subtitles. See below:

This short in its entirety, complete with English language subtitles, can be watched at this link.

Woah, I'm really curious what you think now that you've finished it. I couldn't sleep, and I remember thinking to myself, will something good ever come of this awful, awful feeling I am left with, this hole that has been dug deep into my spirit? A few years later, I think it was worth it.

This is based on the novel "The Piano Teacher" by Elfriede Jelinek, who won the Nobel Prize for literature with her work (but would not show up at the awards because of her severe anxiety and social phobia). The novel may have been partly autobiographical- Jelinek was a child prodigy who was pushed hard by her mother into the "Wunderkind" career, and she studied at the Vienna conservatory. I had started reading the novel one time while on a plane, and I couldn't take it. It was too much. It's a thousand times more stomach-upsetting than the film- Jelinek's aggressive language, persistent negativity, her brutal, provocative, almost insulting honesty and her graphic descriptions are so deeply disturbing that at a certain moment (during the self-mutilation scene) I thought I was going to pass out. It was such an embarrassing moment- the person next to me thought I was experiencing sea sickness and wanted to call the air hostess for a bag. I put down the book and was so afraid to pick it up again, and it was only a couple of years later that I mustered the courage to see the movie.

The director, Michael Haneke, is obsessed with music and with Schubert, by the way. "Amour" is a must-watch, and it features pianist Alexandre Tharaud as himself, also playing Schubert. Lots of people find his work hard to enjoy: he never uses background music (except when it continues from a scene of live playing, often giving new and unexpected layers of meaning to the music), challenges all traditional concepts of cinema, and his sometimes very slow-moving plots require so much patience and attentiveness. But I've always found them incredibly rewarding.

"Love has to be the starting point- love of music. It is one of my firmest convictions that love always produces some knowledge, while knowledge only rarely produces something similar to love."
Arthur Schnabel

The Australian film My Brilliant Career has the protagonist often playing a piano. Schumann's Von Fremden Ländern und Menschen is the core of the theme music for the film and also played by the protagonist early in the film on a rough old upright piano.

Madame Sousatzka. Barry Douglas makes a cameo appearance.

Florence Foster Jenkins is full of pianos. She has a similar-looking Bechstein to the one in The Pianist.

One of my favorites is "The Competition," with Richard Dreyfus and Amy Irving as contestants in a piano competition. Some of the best fakery you'll ever see is in a scene where Amy Irving appears to be playing all the notes in Prokofiev's challenging Piano Concerto No. 3.
