I wonder how many people on the planet have held a job with the same institution for 84 years. I know two high school teachers who worked at the same school for around 60 years but that seems minuscule by comparison.

And to think I worked at the same place only 36 years, which seemed like a century! I guess her job and her work gave Eleanor Sokoloff a reason to keep going and stay healthy until 106 years old. Wow! A life well lived.

Mrs. Sokoloff was a joy.

She was graceful, yet tough, loving, yet stern. She had to be tough, especially when it came to her students. Music has always been tough and she knew that.

I was honored to get to know her while spending time with her and Simon Oss, then Director of Bösendorfer. We spent an afternoon interviewing Mrs. Sokoloff for a feature in Bösendorfer Magazine. Later, we planned a party for her 101st birthday that we called Honoring Mrs. Sokoloff. It was attended by invitation only and most there were professional musicians.

When asked if she had a secret to her longevity and activity, she simply said in my presence, "It is my love of music, my love of my students, and my love of my piano! I love what I do every day."

She was classical piano in Philadelphia personified and she will be sorely missed.

She was older than the Curtis Institute, and almost as old a the Juilliard School.

I hadn't thought of it in those terms, johnstaf. I can tell you that, although Mrs. Sokoloff was not at all ashamed of her age, she would not have been pleased to hear it put that way either. smile

The page at the birthday link Rich posted above lists him as one of her students.
