In terms of action, feel and sound.

If one wants to learn to play the piano using a digital piano (due to small apartment size, budget) but wants to get the most piano like feel (action?) to develop finger muscle dexterity, and to get the most acoustic sound like of a real piano, what are my options?

Budget: Under $7k?

Try every piano you can get your fingers on. Pick whichever you like best.

People mostly want to stick with Yamaha, Kawai, Roland, Casio.
There are some terrible low-end brands to avoid. And some high-end brands not on that list.
But at least you can easily find (usually) pianos from those four brands.

You didn't mention where you are located. That often plays a role in determining what is or is not available.

But availability is important. If I can't put my hands on a piano before buying it, then I cannot buy it.

Yamaha N1X is the best option for your budget. There isn't really anything to compete in that price range, unless you get a Kawai NV-10 at a great price.

No one will be able to tell you that unless you specify a single acoustic that you want to imitate. Otherwise it's pointless, there are thousands of acoustic pianos and each one is different from the other.

If you want to get a digital piano try out a few and see what you like best.

Honestly, I don't know the answer to "what acoustic you want" - I guess, "Normal"? or "Regular" acoustic sounding? Sorry newbie question.

Not all pianos feel the same, but grand pianos that are well-maintained all feel like grand pianos. The N1X is the only piano with a real grand action within your budget.

The case for a digital with a real upright action isn't as clear-cut.

No need to apologise; we've all been there. I played some shockers (acoustic) in my youth as well as some decent ones. The piano teacher's was always rubbish. Glad I never had too many lessons.
These days, a decent acoustic all purpose such as a kawai k300 or 400 would possess a nice keyboard which you could find in their NV digitals at a certain price range. And the sound wouldn't be a million miles off if you played at a decent volume
You can also get a silent (digital) built in adaption for the acoustics at an extra premium.
Same with Yamaha. the NU1X is based on an actual acoustic action. Below these prices, things are a little different.
But from the lowest to the highest, you'll still get a very decent action with which you can take music to a surprisingly high level.
You'll want to try 'em out. The acoustics'd be a good starting place imo. smile

It is my understanding that Kawai CA99 and Clavinovas mimic grand pianos?

All pianos CLAIM to mimic acoustic grand pianos. But claims are not relevant. Claims are seldom meaningful. Claims are often lies in disguise.

If you want the truth, trust your hands and your ears. Try some pianos for yourself.
Spend LOTS of time. Try LOTS of pianos. Including the N1X that johnstaf mentioned.

I can’t agree more. A N1X is quite expensive and trying and comparing it with other pianos is the only way to be sure to choose the right model.

In your budget and your specific needs (action, sound), you can't go run with Yamaha N1X (grand piano action), Kawai NV5 (upright piano action) and Yamaha NU1X (upright piano action).

True that different acoustic pianos feel different, but they all feel like acoustic pianos... which is not something you can say of all the DPs. But, yes, it is worth considering that it is possible to find something that feels like an acoustic, but an acoustic that you don't particularly like! If you like a lighter acoustic, then an authentic feeling DP with a heavy feeling action might not be a good choice for you, and vice versa.

I agree these are the ones you should probably try at that budget if you’re going for maximum realism. Of course, that budget would buy a pretty nice new or used acoustic piano as well…

Read the replies on the announcement thread and you will understand why you should not buy it... my $1500 dollar P-515 has better functionality than the DG-30...
