Yes, James, I’m the first one to post; I have only one question:

what the heck is this? An ES9 tucked in a tacky cabinet?

Once again, I’m not ‘saying’ anything; I’m simply asking, what the heck is this?

It's a CN39 in new cabinet design (DG). Sorry I don't see the (selling) point either.

Tried to find any upgrade from MP7SE, but seems same audio engine.
Nice furniture though and a MP7SE with speakers pretty much, and triple pedal.
But lessons and stuff for those wanting that, Alberts Adult, Czerny etc.

Will certainly look nicer in a home environment than stage piano.

... wink

EDIT:
Just realized that the CN39 got top speaker as well...

Interesting combo of budget features (RH3 action & button interface) in what is normally regarded as a premium form factor. This should allow Kawai to substantially undercut the price of the Yamaha CLP-GP offerings while the slim 87cm depth will appeal to customers who don’t have room for Yamaha’s 130cm GP cabinets. Disappointed it’s not a new Novus or CA but could be a smart business move for Kawai.

(Edit: Doesn't seem, or look, appealing to me. So I'm looking forward to being enlightened. :-))

I take it they start of the new series with a lower end model, I'm looking forward to nicer kawai dg's in the future! smile

I understand this is a dg at an affordable price, but I'm not a fan of it's design. To me it does not look modern, but rather like a digital grand designed 30 years ago. Sorry, just being honest. I probably wouldn't buy it even if I was looking for something like this, specs and affordability wise.

The Ca99, Nv5 and Nv10, those are some fine looking piano's, so the people at Kawai know how to design a nice piano!

This is the first entry level product in the new DG series, but disappoint there is no soundboard speaker, otherwise I think a horizontal soundboard would have a better effect.
Wait for the new products in this series or the new NV at the end of the year.

I think a grand piano shape is appealing, as in the AG model. But here? I'm not seeing a mini-grand. I'm seeing a lump on a log.

On the plus side ... maybe the sound character benefits from the speaker placement?

But have you noticed how the pre-launch hype has generated a great deal of expectation and interest?

Now think about the CLP700 thread. I don't remember any pre-release clues or announcements. But there, too, was a lot of expectation and interest ... which fizzled in the reveal.

Kawai said, "An announcement you don't want to miss." I wouldn't mind missing this.

I think the point is the price tag - when announced - at which price point you get a nice furniture like this with a grand feel to it.

But as entry level with 2x20W is nowhere where you want to be. I had if it was 2x30W on CLP-535 which was last one with speakers I had. And even that felt weak. 2x40W it could sound nice at a volume that feel like an acoustic possibly.

So thinking $1500-$1800 or so would make it remarkable bang for buck. I paid about €1355 for MP7SE and that is with 20% VAT as in europe.
This is what I think the announcement....pricepoint.....

not for me, but I'm guessing Kawai have done their market research and the target market for this is very likely not to be most of us here.

Just sad I wasted time wondering what this might be.

For me, this form factor would make sense if the music stand was positioned as high as on real acoustic Grand pianos (which is important to me, and this is one of the reasons why I don't like uprights) and if there was a keyboard lid like on acoustic grand pianos that would create an authentic "fallboard" area behind the keys.* Both of these factors play a much greater role for me in transmitting the sensations of a real grand piano than the shape of the back and the ability to open the top lid.

So there is neither one nor the other. It takes up more space, and the price will be higher. Not to mention the plastic folding keyboard action. Personally, it doesn't interest me.

* I wonder if it's such a luxury to make such a keyboard lid and proper height of a music stand in a traditional digital piano cabinet (not in upright piano style, like in CA99 or NV5, but like on NV10 or N1X etc.). Both of these points would significantly reduce the feeling that I was sitting at a "toy" piano.

Disappointed, it seems as if they just put one of the their existing models into a grand piano shape, thereby creating a probably overpriced product. Wish they would instead update some of the outdated lower-end digital pianos.
