I am looking for a piano for around 400-700$, and its not that I can't spend more money, but im only an intermediate level player. I have been playing on a free piano for over a year now, so when i play on anything that isnt really bad it sounds nice to me, but i can't judge how good a piano is. Where i live there are no stores, so only private market for around a 2-3 hour radius. I tried out a baldwin spinet that was around 41 inches tall. Its serial number is 1517635 so the piano atlas told me it was from 1993-1994. It is style 655. I couldnt find a whole lot of prices for one. I've quite a bit of research on assessing wwhat condition an upright would be in. It was listed for 600$ and its exterior is almost immaculate and it played well, but i dont have high expectations yet in what to look for playing wise. From what ive seen, this forum has many very informative users so i was wondering if anyone had an idea of what a good condition would be. Another question would be, are spinets actually bad? Wouldn't need to pay a mover or anything since i have moved many pianos before, and we have tuned pianos before so the only cost would be the 600$ and if we found anything that needed fixing before we bought it.

Tl:dr what would you say a 1993-1994 41inch balwin spinet piano is worth in good condition? Would i be getting a good deal? I can try to post a picture if that is needed too.

At 41 inches tall, it’s probably a console, although I’m not sure without seeing whether it’s a drop action, compressed action, or something else.

The front legs on that design are quite fragile, so you’d really want to take care when moving it. I’m assuming your budget allows for tuning and adjustments.

That price sounds good, depending on the overall condition. I’d compare that against new $600-700 digital piano setups, if you had the chance. Either scenario would be what I might recommend for a beginner or casual hobbyist, for what it’s worth.

If it is a spinet with a drop action, I would advise you to pass. If it does not have a drop action, i. e., that the keys extend under the action, rather than being cut off and pulling up on the rest of the action with wires, then it is expensive for what it is, but might be worth making an offer.

Could you clarify the last sentence, so if it is not drop action if could be a good deal in good condition or that would be the most i should pay if it is great condition?

Here’s a short YouTube video of a Baldwin 655. It appe to be a console, not a drop action spinet. But they don’t show the insides. If it’s immaculate as you say then I would buy it. You probably won’t find a better $600 piano.
