I’m a semi retired guitarist—been studying for 3 years practicing on a Kawai ES 110 digital . Actually latched on to a piano that was really just used by an old lady.. lol—nearly 50 years but my tech gave it ok,( has records etc) wife approved w/o my selling any of my guitars so I’m excited. Feels good , sounds good but what kind of action is a On a 1972 Baldwin Howard?
It is not a spinet version but have no clue what drop in, compressed, direct blow means.
Any info on a Baldwin Howard 40 inch piano appreciated -thanks

Congratulations on your Baldwin/Howard console upright acoustic piano! Glad you like it. I too used to be somewhat of a guitar guy, and also learned to play the 5-string banjo (which some members here hate) and the violin a little. The violin was the toughest to learn to play, not that I can play any musical instrument all that well. Started learning to play the piano about 13/14 years ago, and absolutely love it! I too started out on a Cable console acoustic piano, and worked my way up over time. I'm happy for you, Hotstrings! Post a pic when you can. Oh, and Happy Birthday! Rick

I found a similar piano for one of my friends a couple of years ago. She just celebrated (as much as one can) her 100th birthday two months ago. It is never too late!

Congratulations on the new-to-you piano! And happy birthday too. It is not a spinet version but have no clue what drop in, compressed, direct blow means. I've linked a picture in that shows a simple view of the various upright piano size groups. As the height decreases there is less and less room for the action to operate. You can see that by the time you get down to the console that there isn't sufficient room, so the action is "compressed" or shortened in order to work properly (you can see in the depiction that the console's hammer shank is shorter than the others). In the spinet's case, there isn't even room for the compressed action, so it's "dropped" below the keys, and the end of the key is linked to the whippen below rather than lift it directly. At 40 inches, your piano is right on the border between a spinet and a console, so it will likely have the drop action or a compressed action. You can tell by looking at the ends of the keys internally. If they have a linkage extending downwards to the action, it's a "drop" action. Baldwin made some 40" consoles with spinet style drop actions. I don't know about the Howards though.

Wow thanks for all the replies..I love the way the acoustic piano inhales you and you become the piano.. like Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Will be delivered Tuesday.. keep you posted. You can look for my intense 3 yr review of that Kawai Es 110 in the digital forum... I have that lil piano rigged to all the technology I accumulated over 63 years as a guitarist and it sound like a grand but still not same as real strings. That’s probably why I shy away from stomp boxes and such on guitar. Really appreciate those links too

Follow up. -yes I love it and no I had no clue as to how the difference can be practicing on the digital Kawai and going to acoustic. I will try to learn how to post a photo .. it is a Baldwin USA —Howard I can’t stop playing it. As a semi retired guitarist , piano new to me so I’ve been hanging on the digital forum for 3 years thinking bout an upgrade in digital pianos.
Well I’m 75 w no delusions of grandeur on piano. Not like I’m yearning to even go back on the road.. so I just thought that after 3 years of reading about how much effort goes in to technology to make a digital piano sound like a real one, then why not just get a real piano- BD surprise —it’s a Baldwin 1972 # 957641-barely console height but not drop down -A compressed action —might be an acrosonic but might not- no clue. the tech came over to tune it and it’s like new inside. —he spent a good two hours and it sure Is responsive. Sounds very full in music room. So full I used a poor mans mattress pad on wall for sound dampening—subtle but nice change.. I accidentally discovered the soft pedal and was like going to town on it but my teacher said not to do that as it was like cheating w action...
Didn’t touch the Kawai for a week, but when I turned it on it felt like I was playing a toy...it is on the window side of my music room..or as I call it the digital side. I had to reset the Kawai to play as close to Baldwin.
Wife actually loves the sound the acoustic more than the digital side of room. She actually doesn’t hear it as loud.. goes to bed early.
In the end I was so naive not really knowing anything other than Kawai... All those forums so right in suggesting going and really playing it yourself.
Best way I can describe the difference is driving my Oldsmobile 1968 442—u hit the pedal and it goes. My new Honda SUV, hit the pedal and you can almost hear the computer talking to itself trying to decide to go.
Added plus, didn’t expect at all, but this 1972 is tuned like a whisper below 440 so I can use it w all my other digital Gear, applications, garage band ,etc.

There is just nothing else quite like an acoustic instrument! I am so happy you can enjoy one. I love your car illustration. I've noticed a few newer bands using acoustic pianos these days, so there's hope for the future generation, apart from the classical crowd.
