I paid for the Italian grand alone $99 frown and I have to say I'm not very convinced of it.
I thought the Truekeys are all good, similar the Ravenscroft 275. But it's not the case, at least concerning the Italian Grand.
So right now I'm not sure whether I should spend another $99 to get the American & German Grand.
Anyone would jump on the bandwagon or would you say "save money" for VSL / Ivory II keys?

Great discount, but after listening to the examples on the vi labs website and YouTube I can't say it got me convinced.

Somehow it doesn't seem to sound as good as the ravenscroft and the modern U. After owning the Ravenscroft I do know Vi labs is great when it comes to playability.

I have none of these VSTis you speak of, so no experience to refer to. Still, saving up for say the VSL Bösendorfer, sounds like a good plan to me. We're always saying there's no one size fits all piano VST, but if there were, one of the new VSL Synchron pianos would be a good candidate, only jdudging from demos.

FWIW, maybe consider something a bit left field - I remember trying the Waves Grand Rhapsody demo, and thought it sounded great - very bright, clear samples. Looks like it's going for $36 at the moment: https://www.waves.com/plugins/grand-rhapsody-piano
I couldn't bring myself to buy it at the time, because it lacked too many features. (no pedal down samples, unconvincing pedal down resonance simulation, and no re-pedalling) I reckon they should try to refine this instrument.

I have the german grand and do enjoy its distinctive sound, recorded from a smaller concert grand Bechstein.

The sustain is short and I feel that impacts its playability. My speakers struggle to capture the sound, but with headphones I really do enjoy the sound.

I have a German Grand playlist if you are interested on my sound cloud.

I tested all three for the Piano Buyer, and I liked that one the least of the three, and preferred the German grand by a fair margin.

I really like VI Labs Modern U, but I never cared for the True Keys bundle (which I have). I even deleted it from my SSD for a while. I only reinstalled it when I bought a new computer with a bigger SSD. However, I might delete it again since I never use it.

It just doesn't sound lush enough. I'm not talking about reverb, but rather richness and resonance if that makes sense.

God Bless,
David

I own the three and Ravenscroft. I do not own other VSTs. I pretty much never play the three... of them, the Italian is my favorite but its sustain is too short. I only dick with them just to dick with them... but 98% I play only Ravenscroft... which I really really like.

Knowing what I know... I would pass. Or, if you like to dick with stuff, then they do sound pretty good.

Peace

Listening to the demos, I believe the sustains areal rather short compared even to their very own Ravenscroft 275. So, I would pass. smile

I think they're great pianos, but I'd echo the some of the criticisms raised by others. I would put the money toward one of the VSL Synchron pianos, Garritan CFX, or the Ravenscroft, in that order.

I agree with you David B I removed off my computer Italian and finally American after getting Garritan CFX No need to use my Vienna Imperial anymore either. The Garritan CFX is just so playable and predictable and the tone is best I've used so far. I must say I liked the Truekeys American Grand much better than any of the Ivory crap. How about Alicias Key's? What a joke. I've wasted so much hard earned money on this crap. Also VSL ain't going to get my money till they come out with something that totally dwarfs the Garritan CFX. They already got me for Vienna Imperial which sounded and played pretty nice besides the tuning problems. I tried their free demos all of them and they don't do anything for me. Not when Garritan is already paid for waiting to be loaded. While I'm at it how about Pianoteq talk about harsh sounding pianos may play good but that's about it! IMHO of coarse MooganDavid

Same here: $500 usuable (CFX Full, Ravenscroft 275, Pianoteq Standard + Bechstein) and $400 sort of wasted (UVI's Italian Grand, Pianoteq's Glotrian / Bluethner / Steingraeber, Production Grand's Yamaha C7 / Steinway D) - you guys have just prevented me to burn another $100 - Thank you

Hi Kevin,

I've just been listening to your playlist while I work this morning here in Melbourne Australia. Lovely playing - really enjoy your interpretations smile

Been a while since I played any of these but for me they all suffer from the same issue, which is that I just couldn't get them to feel right in terms of loudness. There are several knobs and graphs that have something to do with changing the response of the virtual instruments to input from the controller, and I found it all very unintuitive. That and the pedal resonances didn't satisfy me at all personally. I'd say the Steinway is at least somewhat enjoyable, but I could not get anything out of the Italian and German.
I personally don't like the Ravenscroft either, it has the same issue, plus it sounds cold and lifeless, in that regard even worse than VSL's Steinway IMHO.

Also I can totally relate to wasting a ton of money on piano VSTs. I wish I could have found out about, uh, "alternative solutions" to this problem much earlier so I could have discovered how unsatisfying so many of these libraries are before wasting my money on them. Of all the ones I bought I think only the Garritan CFX made me not feel buyer's remorse at all, everything else came attached with at least one prolongued moment of "I think that was a bad idea", even though I'll occasionally get enjoyment out of some of the others.

It's obvious from the demo tracks that these pianos are not on the same level as the Ravenscroft 275. The Modern U3 most probably meets the same high standards but that's a U3 and it's not on sale right now. I hoping that VI Labs will one day release a Steinway D.

Craig, thanks for the compliment.

I know Melbourne well, I lived there from 1990-98, though it has changed a lot since and my partner is from Melbourne.

The only track in that playlist that doesn't work for me is the Nocturne, where the shorter sustain impacts the interpretation too much.

I have not touched the German Grand for six weeks while enjoying my most recent purchases of Vienna and Bösendorfer Imperial from VSL. However I used it for my practise last night and again for most of this morning's practise and I really do enjoy it. Perhaps it is unfair because I only have Garritan CFX lite, but if I was forced to remove a VST due to needing the disk space it would Garritan that would be first to go.

+1

A new American D from VI labs, that would probably have me hit the put in cart button.
