I thought I heard this before, then I realized it's "Nella fantasia" in my Russell Watson CD, and Sarah Bingham was the original singer.

Another article in today's NY Times about Morricone:

Also, he "wrote" the shortest leitmotif ever, guess what?

He was amazingly creative. In a world of generic film soundtracks, he was one of a kind.

Like Bernard Herrmann, he could create a cultural icon from a simple musical idea.

In the 90-s there was a TV-series "La Piovra" broadcasted on the Bulgarian national television about the Mafia with Morricone's soundtrack. A lot of iconic themes that I still hear as people's ringtones here in Bulgaria. He's a pure genius. One of a kind. Very different than the typical soundtrack composer.

I wonder if he was the most prolific film composer of all time. The NY Times obit said he wrote the scores for around 500 films. Seems impossible.

Although some of his spaghetti-western films scores have very catchy music, I mostly like his more ballad- like music, often tinged with sadness. For example:

I've always thought this was one of the most incredible pieces of film scoring I've ever heard. 4:18 is utterly breathtaking.

Agree with pianoloverus, I love his more wistful compositions. When my son was a baby my wife and I used to sing this one to get him to sleep.

And I think the movie is sensationally good. I think it's available for free on YouTube.

+1. Mercuzio has made several good piano arrangements of those.

I got a dirt cheap NYT subscription, so it's great to be able to read all these articles!
